Wednesday, 9am: Fulham defender Matthew Briggs has joined Peterborough United on a month’s loan to end an 18-month pursuit by Darren Ferguson.

Posh boss Ferguson was following the 20 year-old’s progress when he was managing Preston in The Championship. He’s delighted to be able to include the left-back in the squad for Saturday’s Championship clash with league leaders West Ham at London Road.

Ferguson said: “Matthew is a player I’ve been interested in for a while, even when I was at Preston. He has great pace, a good left-foot and I’m delighted to be able to bring him to our club.

“He can play at centre-back, but his main position is left-back. I have been using Craig Alcock or Tommy Rowe in that position, but we have won the majority of our games when Tommy has been in midfield.

“Matthew gives us another option and he adds a bit of quality to the squad.”

Briggs is a graduate from the Fulham Academy and has made six Premier League appearances for The Cottagers. He was a regular in the club’s Europa League campaign this season and scored in a tie at Crusaders.

Briggs has also skippered England Under 19s and played for England Under 21s.

Posh centre-back Gaby Zakuani knows Briggs well from their days at Fulham together. Zakuani said: “Matthew is a great young player and a top lad. He’s big, but good on the ball. He’s got a big future in the game and it’s a great signing for us.”

Posh are also chasing a centre-back to replace Ryan Bennett. Chairman Darragh MacAnthony used his Twitter account yesterday to say: “There should be a new young hungry centre-back signing on loan with a view to a permanent deal in place very soon but nothing is signed as of yet.

“He’s another gem we have scouted for a couple of years. He’s strong in the air and composed with the ball at his feet.”

What do you think of the signing?

#21: Not too difficult to keep Keates out of the line up, considering that he's doing quite well at Wrexham...,.

You would all do better slagging McCann off. When does he ever do any tackling back. Most of the goals we have conceded have come from him not getting his foot in. Burnley the latest case in point. No wonder Scunny got rid and they went down.

Ferguson stated " we have won the majority of our games when Rowe has been in midfiled" - we have won 9 of our 10 wins when Rowe has been in midfield. So that statement is true.

He's an everpresent in a Championship side, therefore he is a Championship player, and he's keeping the likes of Keates and Tunnicliffe out of the team so he's not just there to make the numbers up, he's there by right. No he's not got the skill or creativity of Zidane or Messi but we have enough attacking talent in the side, we need some players to do the basics and mop up behind the likes of Boyd Taylor and Tomlin.

Well, the obvious intended meaning of the comment was that on most of the occasions that we have won this season, Tommy Rowe has been playing in midfield, which is absolutely true. So stop bickering over semantics Mr Pedantic Pants. It may not be exactly what Fergie Jnr said anyway - this is the Evening Telegraph, after all.

#13 mangun and #16 Gilroy. Have you read the article? It is not going off the subject by mentioning Rowe. Fergie actually brought the subject up in the article ,so I for one was questioning whether or not it was accurate in what he was saying .He said that when Rowe was in midfield we won the majority of our games. Seeing that he has played about 25 games in the midfield and we have won 9 with him there the statement was obviously not in any way accurate. It was not an attack on Rowe at all, which I clearly stated, just that I would have been surprised if it was true, and not knowing the answer myself , asked if anyone else did. Anyway , Keep the Faith,Up the Posh. Lads excellent in training . !

Good signing.defensive cover. Has rowe ever crashed in a 3O yarder? Come to think of it has he ever produced a defence splitting pass? Yes he got good movement which is usually knowhere near the ball. The guy is a waste of a player on the pitch and at best is a bencher for injury cover. Its so sad when you get people moaning at the moaners and yet no one can give good reasons why rowe is constantly in the team. Except for he plays for peanuts and is a fergie yes man

Danhar #11 " it winds me up when I hear Fergie big Rowe up when I've said for a few seasons now is not a Championship player " etc.. The sheer audacity of Darren Ferguson ignoring your advice and knowledgable imput on team selection. Just who does he think he is .... the Manager ?????

Do Posh fans expect Rowe to crash in a 30 yarder every other game, or make defence splitting passes every time he gets the ball? He's got good movement, popping up all over the park, he's our best defender out of our midfield quartet and he has the most energy aswell. Stop looking for a scapegoat, the whole team has been to blame for recent loss of form and not just one player.

We have only got 3 points from a possible 21 in the last 7 games when Zakuani was playing.Lets blame him for the losses as its obviously his fault. What a bunch of moaning fools you lot are, going off topic to slate another one of our players.Hope this new lad does well for all the whingers on here.
