Posh sign 'Alexander the Great' - 30/05/06

KEITH Alexander was today given the job of leading Posh back to League One.

KEITH Alexander was today given the job of leading Posh back to League One.The 49 year-old was unveiled at a London Road press conference less than a month after steering local rivals Lincoln City to the League Two play-offs for the fourth successive season.

Posh Director of Football Barry Fry claimed that his board of directors halted their search for a new manager as soon as Alexander became available.

He quit 'The Imps' just six days ago, but Posh had to fight off stiff competition from League One side Tranmere to land their man.

Fry said: "As soon as Keith became available he was the only man in the frame. He's worked miracles at Lincoln and I'm confident he will do the same for us.

"We went to see Keith the night he left Lincoln and we followed it up the next day. Tranmere made him an unbelievable offer of twice the salary we will pay, but I'm delighted to say he's chosen us.

"We cancelled all our other interviews scheduled for this weekend because we are convinced we have found the right man to lead us to promotion."

Alexander's ability to produce winning teams under tight financial constraints attracted the Posh board of directors.

Notts County also made a late bid to tempt Alexander back to the city of his birth, but to no avail.

Alexander took charge at Lincoln in time for the start of the 2002-03 season and he has never failed to lead them to the play-offs.

Alexander replaces Mark Wright, who lasted just eight months in the job. Steve Bleasdale and Fry himself managed Posh in a caretaker capacity for the final four months of a disappointing season.
