Posh sign £1m striker
Peterborough United news and match coverage.
5.10pm: Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that Posh have made their first million-pound signing in striker Tyrone Barnett.
The 26-year-old highly-rated Crawley Town striker is an emergency loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.
MacAnthony said on Twitter: “Pleased to confirm Posh have smashed transfer record and signed one of most sought-after target men striker outside the Championship in a seven-figure deal.
“Our Gaffer wanted this one badly and I am glad to deliver!
“Also beat six tasty Championship clubs to this deal, trust me on that. Gives our squad that different presence everyone likes to talk about.
“Exciting!”
Darren Ferguson commented: “He is technically very good, he has decent pace and he is extremely good in the air, one of the best I have seen for a while. It gives us a different outlet.”

We have just bought our first £1million pound player. I think those two would struggle to buy a bag of chips at the moment lol. Up the Posh, Keep the faith. Lads excellent in training.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 02:35 PM#41. Dont be ridiculous. We will both be too worse for wear after our glorious win at Doncaster on saturday with our new 1 million pound striker to venture into those depths of despair outposts on Sunday lol. Up the Posh Keep the Faith . I hear Barnett has been excellent in training

The Gunthorpe one was is in Peterborough. It is the outlying towns I was suggesting. It was mentioned earlier by other correspondants that it is no point just advertising it on the Posh website as it is only current fans and people like us who ever look at it . It is the people who dont come now and would never dream of looking at the website voluntarily that we should be targetting. My daughter has certainly never had a Posh player come to any of her schools though. Up the Posh, Keep the Faith, Lads excellent in training .

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 01:59 PMGNAT - McCann has certainly visited a school in Bourne recently for the club and Lewis visited a Gunthorpe school this week as reported on Posh website. I'm sure there have been other examples.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 12:53 PMSchools ? How often have any of the Posh players been to schools in the area. I am fed up with all my daughters friends saying they support Man U and Liverpool. When I ask them why they say they have never seen a Posh player. A large number of the support is not from the city, but from the outlying towns, like Deeping, Bourne, Spalding, March and Huntingdon. I have NEVER seen any Posh representation in Bourne or Deeping. On the games where we know we have small crowds why not have a section purely for school kids, and let them in free. Believe me , if you get the kids hooked they will drag their dads (or mums) along for the next match. If these seats are empty what have we got to lose. Not only that but the greedy little beggars will drink and eat more than a potential entrance fee anyway. Believe me I know about this one lol .Anyway Up the Posh, Keep the Faith, lads excellent in training .

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 12:31 PMTotally Agree. Instead of just writing statements on theposh.com we need to promote ourselves. Macantoney always says they do loads of marketing. But I've never ever seen any outside of the ET, Posh.com and places where current fans go. If we get into the community. Send Peter Burrow into the city centre handing out flyers and offers then they will come. I work in MK and we've had their mascot coming into our office handing out ticket deals. Needless to say I declined.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 12:13 PMYes I agree. The club does not exactly sell itself very well. Perhaps the marketing side needs to get out in the town centre with flyers advertising forthcoming games and perhaps other forms of entertainment etc would be a start. Offering cut price for schoolkids on a regular basis might be a start like other clubs do.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 10:29 AMHow to improve attendances? An interesting question. I think staceyf has a point. We need to create interest amongst the people who live in the area which includes lots of cultures. Signing a couple of Polish or Lithuanian players might help so long as they are good enough. Also to be honest, Ive lived in pboro for 10 years and if it wasnt for the floodlights and the ET I wouldnt know POSH existed! When I return to my home city, which has a lg2 club, you cant walk through the centre without being stopped by the mascot handing out leaflets about upcoming games, or offering free football lessons for kids, ran by ex pros. Clearly the Marketing department needs to work alot harder. People also want to go to a clean, tidy, smart stadium. I know this is being done, but the sooner the better, not just the stands but the whole area around the ground needs to look smarter. Other than that its just continued success that will bring people along - over to you Fergie.
