Posh pride before a fall

Peterborough United manager Jim Gannon insisted he was proud of his players despite their Championship revival coming to a cruel end last night.

John Oster hit a cruel last-minute winner as Doncaster came from behind to claim an undeserved 2-1 success at London Road. Posh remain eight points from safety.

They were without striker Aaron Mclean who suffered a knee injury in training on Monday while fellow frontman Liam Dickinson went off at half-time with a hamstring problem.

Gannon said: “We had problems before and during the game with injuries and a lot of lads looked tired before they even went out there.

“We got the breaks but didn’t take our chances and credit to Doncaster for doing that.

“A few players might find it difficult to sleep while thinking about one or two opportunities they had.

“But I know I am asking a massive amount of my players every day and in every single game.

“All I want is for us to be competitive and give ourselves a chance of winning games and that happened again tonight.

“Unfortunately the only thing missing was a goal that would have secured a win.”

And victorious Doncaster manager Sean O’Driscoll was certainly impressed by Posh.

He said: “They played so well that I certainly wouldn’t rule them out of staying up.”

Mclean and midfielder Lee Frecklington have a chance of returning when Posh go to promotion-chasing Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Chris Whelpdale and Dickinson are more doubtful.

Posh Reserves are at Norwich this afternoon in a Totesport Combination League game.
