Posh preview: Pompey gunning for their revenge
REVENGE will be on the menu for Pompey players when they arrive at London Road against Portsmouth on Saturday (3pm).
The visitors are still smarting from their last-gasp 3-2 defeat at the hands of Posh at Fratton Park in September when substitute Ryan Tunnicliffe forced an own goal from Erik Huseklepp deep into injury time.
That was an unfortunate defeat according to Pompey full-back Joel Ward who accepts his team will have to improve on a dismal Championship away record which shows just one win all season.
Ward said: “We were the better side that night. We dominated the game, but they broke away and scored a winner in the last minute.
“We need a similar performance tomorrow, but with a different result and I’m confident we will get it. That defeat hurt us a bit.
“We’ll look to get at them straight away. We’ve got more than enough talent in our squad to cause them problems and to get three points.
“We are concentrating on doing our jobs, but people insist on bringing up our away form!
“We’ve done well at home this season, but we know we have to improve on our travels, starting tomorrow.”
Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton insisted his side will have to play well to collect three points. He’s a fan of the Posh style of play,
Appleton said: “We’ve got a difficult game against a really good side. Take no notice of some of their recent results, they play some really good football. I like the way they play.
“They are a young side and Darren Ferguson has got a young group of players there who are very athletic and have a lot of enthusiasm.
“I watched their game against Brighton last week and they caused them a heck of a lot of problems. They were unlucky to lose the game.
“Our results haven’t gone to plan lately either, but we’ve worked very hard this week on trying to prepare the team properly to win this game.
“We had a man sent off against West Ham when I am sure we would have beaten them with 11 players and then we travelled to Cardiff last week with 13 fit senior players and two of them were goalkeepers so life was difficult from the start.
“We ended up losing the game in the fourth minute of injury time which tells me we have players who will fight to the death and have a fantastic attitude.”
