Posh: No rush for defensive signings
Peterborough United v Doncaster Rovers match action. Alcock
Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has no immediate plans to bolster his defence.
The club have been left short of cover for colossal central defensive duo Ryan Bennett and Gaby Zakuani following the departures of loan players Josh Thompson and Scott Wootton in recent days.
It leaves youngster Peter Grant, who was last week handed a development contract, as the only other recognised central defender at the club, but Ferguson insists he will not be rushing out to make a permanent signing in that position in the current transfer window.
Ferguson feels impressive full-back Craig Alcock could comfortably deputise in the middle of the Posh back-line if required or he could dip into the loan market if or when required in the future.
Ferguson said: “I’m not looking to bring anyone in defensively. We have Craig who would be able to play there without a problem if required.
“People often forget that the loan window re-opens a week after the transfer window shuts, so it is not a case of having to panic and sign someone quickly on a permanent deal.
“We could always draft someone in on loan if the need were to arise due to injury or suspension.”
While the club might be a little short of numbers at the back, they have a full compliment of midfield talent at their disposal again.
Ferguson confirmed Lee Frecklington is fit to return for the visit of Portsmouth on Saturday after undergoing groin surgery.
Skipper Grant McCann is also set to be included in the Posh starting line-up for the first time since suffering a knee injury at Leicester in December.
The Northern Ireland international came on as a substitute in the disappointing home defeat at the hands of Brighton last Saturday.
George Boyd is also available again after an infected leg kept him out of the Seagulls clash.
Ferguson added: “They are all big players and we have been at our best when they have been involved. It is obviously a big boost to have them available again.
“Sometimes you really notice when a player is missing and I felt that was the case with George last Saturday.
“The same applies to Grant who is our top scorer as well as a very influential player and it is also good to have ‘Freck’ back. He has done very well and chipped in with goals this season.”

This is a rubbish website
Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 01:49 PMI got no sympathy for Portsmouth whatsoever (only for the fans I suppose). They spent way beyond what they could afford and even after they into administration (the first time), they still continued to buy players and pay higher wages. To answer your question - if they completely fold then I do think that any points gained against them will be lost. On that basis I'd prefer them to just lose 10 points. UTP

Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 12:48 PMJust been thinmking about the Pompey Situation. Should we beat them on Saturday we will have taken 6 points from them. What happens to these points should the worst happen to Pompey? (By the way - the last thing i want to see is Popmey go out of business!!! A great Club with outstanding fans!!!! - i for one would throw some money in a hat if they did a whip round on saturday! ) Do we lose the points? If so - everyone else will too, and it will make the leage look very different. From my investigations this is who would lose points from those gained against Pompey so far: Feel free to correct me if ive got it wrong: Posh - 6 points (ifwhen we win) West Ham - 6 points Cardiff - 4 points Millwall - 3 points Brighton - 3 points Hull - 3 points Leeds - 3 points Ipswich - 3 points Derby - points Watford - 3 points Leicester - 2 points Middlesbrough - 1 point Bristol City - 1 point Palace - 1 point Southampton - 1 point
