Posh defence not on speaking terms
POSH defender Craig Alcock reckons it was so cold at Burnley on Saturday that he couldn’t speak for 90 minutes!
Alcock, who delivered another excellent defensive display at left-back, insisted that Posh picked up an excellent point from a match played in the worst conditions he could remember.
Posh led for 76 minutes after Paul Taylor’s impressive first-half goal, only to concede an equaliser to 17-goal Jay Rodriguez three minutes from full-time.
The point was good enough to move Posh 10 points clear of the bottom three. Bottom side Coventry lost at home to Ipswich, while the games involving Doncaster and Nottingham Forest were postponed.
“It was so cold my face was numb for 90 minutes,” Alcock revealed, “I couldn’t speak for the whole game so there was hardly any communication going on out there.
“It was the worst playing that I’ve ever experienced. The snow was flying in our faces in the second half so to get a point against a good team in those conditions was a great effort.
“We were actually pretty disappointed at the end of the game because we had led for so long. We felt we had weathered the storm so to concede a goal so late was frustrating.
“We should be happy with the way we played though. The biggest disappointment wasn’t so much the late equaliser, but the fact that we couldn’t get a second goal when we were on top in the first-half.
“That’s the best we’ve played for a while so we will take plenty of confidence from that. We would have taken a point before the game.”
Posh are still without a win in 2012 and manager Darren Ferguson’s initial reaction after the match concentrated on missing a great chance to end that statistic at Turf Moor.
Ferguson said: “They couldn’t live with us in the first half and we really should have killed the game off.
“Our gameplan worked a treat. I watched Burnley beat Nottingham Forest last week and they were excellent so I knew we were in for a tough match.
“But I also felt we could have plenty of joy by getting men free behind their midfield and in front of the back four and in the first half we did just that.
“George took up some great positions and we worked some excellent opportunities, but we just couldn’t find a second goal that would have made the second half so much more comfortable. I always knew Burnley would have a spell of pressure because they’re a very good side, but we didn’t help ourselves by failing to keep hold of the ball in the second half.
“The boys defended well though and it did look we had come through it. We could have defended the goal better, but there is no denying the lad took it well.”
Posh dropped a place to 18th thanks to Watford’s win over Barnsley. Ferguson’s men now face two tough matches at home to Championship leaders and title favourites West Ham this Saturday and away to third-placed Cardiff on February 14.
The Hammers will be without captain and top scorer Kevin Nolan at London Road following his first half dismissal in a 2-1 weekend win over Millwall.
Ferguson added: “It’s a nice easy fixture to follow this one! But it’s also an easy one to prepare for as we’re playing the biggest team in the Championship in front of a full house. The match looks after itself.”

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 11:32 AMI went to the Leicester Tigers game on the same day, driving snow in the faces of the players. It didn't seem to make any difference to the players, the were shouting, tackling, running, mauling, the lot.

Monday, February 6, 2012 at 02:09 PMWhy can't we hold the ball? Are the players inferior to the rest of the Championship. Perhaps we ought to practice more on keeping possession in training if the players can cut it. Cold? It's hardly the Ukraine is it? Perhaps that's why Burnley scored. The players were frozen to the spot. That 's what it looked like anyway.
