Peterborough United are close to signing highly-rated Macclesfield centre-back Shaun Brisley.

Posh have agreed a loan deal with the League Two side which could see the 21 year-old arrive at London Road before Saturday’s Championship clash with West Ham.

It would be a loan for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer. The clubs have already agreed a transfer fee.

Brisley will be seen as the natural replacement for Ryan Bennett who will move to Premier League side Norwich City at the end of this month for a fee believed to be in the region of £3.2 million.

Posh Director of Football Barry Fry said: “We are interested in Shaun and we have nearly completed the deal which is a loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

“There is no rush because Ryan is here for four more games, but we could actually have Shaun here before the weekend.

“He won’t be ready to play against West Ham, but he could be in the building. The manager thinks he has found another top young prospect.”

Brisley came through the youth ranks at Macclesfield and is highly-regarded by the Cheshire club. He made his debut at 17 and has since amassed 141 appearances for the club.

Brisley has been an ever-present in the Macclesfield team this season, scoring three goals and collecting just two cautions.

He’s known as a footballing defender, comfortable in possession, but the 6ft 2in youngster is also good in the air and strong in the tackle.

Brisley could be the second Posh signing of the week after left-back Matthew Briggs moved to London Road on loan from Premier League Fulham.

Bennett leaves for Carrow Road after the crunch Championship relegation battle at Doncaster on February 25.

It’s understood Posh were offered Norwich central defender Leon Barnett on loan as part of the Bennett transfer, but the arrival of Brisley and injuries to two Norwich centre-backs at the weekend may have scuppered the deal.

POSH have covered the London Road surface ahead of Saturday’s big game. The forecast is for a Friday night temperature of -4.

POSH Reserves drew 0-0 in a friendly at Notts County yesterday. The match was played on County’s 3G surface.

Another player to sell on to a higher level in time to keep our little club afloat. Whats not to like? We are very much punching above our weight at present, and doing remarkably well i might add. I would like to know how many keyboard critics on here actually pay to follow Posh.

Think it sounds a good signing to me. also getting him in on loan first before purchasing him is a good idea in case he doesn't make the grade. Pity we didn't do that with some of our other signings....

He sounds like a very good prospect who could turn out to be another Bennett so worth a punt but not entirely convinced about having a young League 2 player replace our multi-million pound defender. UTP

Bennett leaves for Carrow Road after the crunch Championship relegation battle at Doncaster on February 25..............................Did I miss summat here? POSH are 10 points ahead of Doncaster who are in the last relegation spot. Make that 11 points really when youi take their GD of -22. Why let the facts get in the way of a potential negative story eh Swanny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
