Posh and Notts County charged over ‘mass confrontation’

Friday, 5pm update: Peterborough United and Notts County have both been hit with two charges of ‘mass confrontation’ following the ugly Tuesday night scenes.

Posh head of sports science Ben Mackenzie and Notts County coach Mark Draper have both been charged separately with violent conduct.

An FA statement reads: “Following incidents in the fixture between the two sides at London Road on 28 September 2010, The FA have charged both clubs with:

. Failure to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour.

.Failure to ensure its players and/or officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from violent and/or threatening and/or provocative behaviour.

Meanwhile Peterborough official Ben Mackenzie and Notts County official Mark Draper have both been charged separately with violent conduct relating to one of the incidents in the same fixture.

Under The FA’s new fast-track procedures all parties have until 4pm on 5 October to respond.”

Posh confirmed they have received documentation relating to the charges and are currently taking advice on them.

Nothing like a good Bench Clearance.

Yes, the referee should have stopped McCann from slide tackling the opponent by standing between the players prior to contact, as the incident caused the County bench to go ballistic. The County time wasting would have resulted in a melee anyway, even if the ref had clamped down on it, as county would have objected. The ref cannot win in a situation. The idiots who are so called officials of the clubs are too blame, not the ref..

All well and good! I see nothing regarding the referee, one who failed to control the match, which led to frayed tempers all round, from players to officials. If the FA would like to hear the comments of an ex referee's secretary, I might put forward the suggestion that the referee simply lost all control. In future, he might inform the fourth official that he is not an ornament or an easel to carry boards, but there to report ungentlemanly conduct emanating from the technical areas and to ask the referee to intervene.
