Peterborough United agreed to sign a new central defender yesterday (Wednesday), who will join the club in the summer.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed the deal on his Twitter account - but has insisted on the identity of the player remaining confidential.

The mystery player has signed a pre-contract deal which means he is inside the final six months of his existing contract at his current club.

MacAnthony said: “We did sign a long-term centre-back target on Monday who arrives in June.

“I am not allowed to name him but the gaffer chased him for a while.

“He’s a good player who will fit in well. He has signed a three-year pre-contract deal.”

And MacAnthony promised further transfer activity as soon as the loan market re-opens on February 8.

Posh need to draft in a replacement for Ryan Bennett who is back on loan for a month following his club record sale to Norwich City in the final hour of the January transfer window.

But MacAnthony also used his Twitter account to insist there will be no knee-jerk reactions in the transfer market and no shift from the club’s tried-and-tested recruitment policy.

MacAnthony added: “We will be signing loans that will become permanent deals come summer time.

“There will be no panic buys at all. We are only after players we have already scouted.

“It still feels sore to see Ryan go and it wasn’t an enjoyable day, but that’s football and I feel this deal will only strengthen our club.

“We preach to young players with potential to come here and learn their craft before then moving on to the top level in time.

“It is good for us and good for the player, and if we denied these players that kind of move to a top-12 Premier League side, we would then struggle to beat other clubs to these young, hungry players.”

What do you think of the deal?

#2jans7labs. So after 55 years you are hanging up your season ticket ? I have watched them for 30 years and this is about the best we have ever been, with certainly a better team than Turner had when we were here before. I have suffered years of absolute rubbish, mostly in the lower reaches of league one, and league two mediocraty. For the past five years it has been fun watching Posh again, even the relegation season was better than league two. We now have the chance to establish ourselves in this league with a bit of luck, and you finally decide Posh are not for you. As you have your season ticket this year I suppose you will be going to the West ham match, or as a principled guy you will give your ticket for the rest of the season to someone who wants it . Hmm I doubt it. Never mind, next year you and Quail can sit at home together and shout at the radio and then ring Radio cambs and tell everyone how the match went and what you would do to solve it . I, and many others will still be there watching them, whether its Championship, or League one football, because at the end of the day we love going . At the end of the day as long as the club survives (which it wouldnt have done without Dmac Quail ) it is up to us to comment on what is going on , which will involve not agreeing with what they are doing at times ,but ultimately leave it to the people who have got us where we are today . Anyway, Keep the Faith. Up the Posh. p.s I hear the lads have been excellent in training all week lol.

Goodness me!!! The way people are writiing on here they must have thought we were going to sign established, greedy, agent-driven Premiership players to mastermind a late surge up the table towards the play off's. The plan goes wrong, we get relegated(I am talking hypothetically) and end up with a massive wage bill for players in Division1 with crowds back down to 5,000. Doomsday scenario, but seems one that many contributors on here will not be happy until it happens. Three promotions in four seasons, players being sold for millions of pounds, bids for players for millions of pounds, this week Burnley away(prem team two years ago), WEST HAM at home the week after(SOLD OUT!!) Can't think of a better way to get Darrah and Darren to walk away than to continue to moan and moan about their achievements. I will say that again ACHIEVEMENTS Crowds of 7,000 and yet we have a fantastic chance toSTAY UP. So if that isn't what you want Tesco's is open on a Saturday afternoon. They would welcome your custmer and they have a counter that is dedicated to Customer Complaints. You should all feel at home

Go to www.companycheck.co.uk to search our fellow Championship clubs finances and no one could question our safer, more sensible approach to running a football club. The debt that Portsmouth, Coventry, Forest, Hull, Cardiff, Bristol City have is shocking. Made me feel a lot better. UTP

@18 Just to let you know. We didn't make any money from the Wembley appearance. Because the final was at Old Trafford. These players have had a good 1st half of the season. Now we are going through a lean spell all the all the doom mongers start moaning. Why do Posh fans do it. We have had the best 4 or 5 seasons in our league history and somer people just can't wait for them to fail.

@18 - For the last time of telling smoking that stuff will end in tears mate. BTW, Rooney has just told MUTV that he's turning down a move to POSH in favour of Rochdale but Tevez says he might be interested as he's heard that KFC is close to the ground.

18 you are exactly the sort of fan that gets on my nerves. These players are the same ones that got us high flying in the Championship earlier in the year, and with regards to transfers we are doing the same as we have always done. It was only a matter of time for Bennett to go, he's a quality player and deserves his opportunity. We paid 500,000, made 3 million and got a promotion out of him. In perspective it's good business for the club. As for players like Lewis and Sinclair, fans are so unfair. Any little thing Lewis does wrong gets picked up on, and Sinclair is our top scoring striker. He doesn't play particularly well due to a lack of technical ability which is key in the team but he has scored goals which is what a striker should do.

16 the fans pay their money and they can clearly see what is wrong with the club hence the criticism of the names you mention-it is clear we have peaked and new leadership is now badly needed and some posh players do need to be shown the door.Fans are frustrated and i see back to back relegations coming up unless the problems are addressed urgently.i do think with their transfer policy dmac and fry are draining the club as i dont see the money recouped from transfer fees and the wembley appearance being reinvested properly.

@15 - I have only ever stated that DMac & Ferguson are the best thing that's ever happened to POSH in my time of watching them which is since 1974 mate. My point, however, still remains the same. When whoever it was at London Road decided to have a quiet word in the ear of DMac about knowing a young hungry manager down the road at Kettering - go on then, guess who that may have been - we ended up with Fez Cooper - Terry, why didn't you have a vasectomy? - who couldn't manage to find his backside with both hands. That then led to a shambles for the rest of the season & having watched some debacles like getting hammered 6 nil at Reading & 4 nil at Scunny, I wasn't of the frame of mind to call that being spoilt. If you did, maybe you should stay at home. The problem is that the club have too many that stay away as it is. Is that clear or do you need further clarification?

@14.... you didn't answer the question asked. Are you a politician? The option wasn't to cut out just the relegation season, that's a given. 'Fans' are moaning at DarraghDarren and apparantly want rid of them. I'm saying would you rather have not had them turn up in the first place, not have the relegation AND the promotions, or have them turn up, have 3 great seasons and 1 rubbish season? This is football. We are Posh. You should probably stay at home.

@11 - No, I'd have rather not have seen DF sent from LR two seasons ago & have avoided the need for promotion last season & by now have had a stable Championship side in the top half of the league. I certainly didn't enjoy the other 3 managers here; did you? That's real!!!!!!

So the player we have 'signed' on a pre contract, is joining us not knowing whether we will be championship or league one ? Doesnt suggest a big name then. This also means that we will be using make shift centre backs for the rest of the season to keep us up in the first place ?!, The pre contract player will not want to come if his place is already taken by another centre back who we have 'signed on loan with a view to making the move permanent in the summer '. #10 itsposhup north.. QUAIL, in the last few days has said to sack all the forwards at the club, get rid of the director of football, get rid of fergie, and get rid of Dmac as well. He will be asking why we havent signed John Terry today no doubt to replace benno lol. p.s I take it all the people who say they have had enough of Posh aint going to see them play West Ham then . Or is that different ? lol. Keep the faith . Up the Posh.
