POSH REACTION: How the penalty shoot-out was won (and lost)
Martin Samuelsen and Lee Angol saw their spot-kicks saved by West Brom ‘keeper Ben Foster, while Darren Fletcher missed the target for the Baggies.
It was a surprise that Posh midfielder Erhun Oztumer didn’t take a penalty, but this wasn’t a night for recriminations or an inquest as the generous applause that rang around the ABAX at the end of the shoot-out suggested.

Hide AdWEST BROM: Substitute defender Sebastien Pocognoli is the surprising first penalty taker for the Baggies. But he calmly sends Ben Alnwick the wrong way and plants the ball low to the keeper’s right. 1-0
POSH: The Posh banker Michael Bostwick steps up and as usual blasts the ball as hard as he can down the middle of the goal. Not as much elevation as usual, but Baggies’ ‘keeper Ben Foster had sensibly dived out of the way. 1-1
WEST BROM: Saido Berahino missed a last-gasp sitter to win the game in extra time, but it didn’t affect his composure as he also sends the ball to the bottom left of Alnwick’s goal. Alnwick had gone right again, 2-1
POSH: Marcus Maddison doesn’t lack self-belief and it showed as he strolled up and planted the ball to the right of Foster who had moved left. 2-2

POSH: Oh no man-of-the-match Martin Samuelsen, who has been brilliant for most of the night, takes a soft penalty which Foster barely moves in order to make the save. Samuelsen received a standing ovation from the home fans as he walked back to the centre circle. 3-2
WEST BROM: A Posh lifeline as Darren Fletcher, a player who has scored a spot-kick in a European Champions League Final shoot out for Manchester United, sends his low shot to the left of Alnwick’s goal. Just as well as Alnwick had shot off in the other direction. 3-2
POSH: Few would have predicted Andrew Fox would play in this game, but he capped a fine personal display with a very cool penalty. It nestled in the bottom left of Foster’s goal (from Fox’s view) and it had to be precise as the goalkeeper had dived in that direction. 3-3

Posh: It’s all over Posh as Lee Angol approached his penalty with a very nervous, tired-looking, shuffling run-up and it’s no surprise that he sends it too close to Foster who makes a comfortable save.
FINAL SCORE: West Brom 4, Posh 3.
