Posh: Profits boosted by Batt transfer fee

THE sale of Shaun Batt to Championship side Millwall for £300,000 has taken Posh past the million pound mark in terms of income from transfers in 2010.

Striker Batt completed his move to the Lions yesterday in what will be seen as an outstanding piece of transfer business by Posh director of football Barry Fry.

The deal with Millwall represents a remarkable 5,900 per cent profit on a player Posh signed from non-league Fisher Athletic for just £5,000 in the summer of 2008.

It’s even more remarkable as Batt scored just four goals for Posh in two years and was never a regular starter in the first team.

Fry revealed some other figures yesterday which suggest he has negotiated plenty of other big-money deals.

Midfielder Paul Coutts was sold to Preston for £350,000 in January which represents a 1,300 per cent profit on a player who cost Posh just £25,000.

Oxford spent £50,000 to take winger Alfie Potter, who cost Posh nothing. Posh will also benefit by 25 per cent of any transfer deal should Potter, Batt or Coutts be sold on in the future.

Nottingham Forest also paid £350,000 just to take winger George Boyd on loan for three months last season, while Norwich City and Bournemouth paid Posh £50,000 and £25,000 respectively as part of the transfer deals for Russell Martin and Shwan Jalal.

Fry said: “It’s been a very successful period. There is no doubt that the club’s policy, set up by chairman Darragh MacAnthony, of investing in non-league players who are young and hungry, has paid off handsomely.

“Over the last three years the chairman has also turned down offers of over £6 million for George Boyd, Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron Mclean which shows his desire not to sell our best players.”

Posh have paid no transfer fees for their four new summer signings Grant McCann, James Wesolowski, Mark Little and Dave Hibbert.

Since January, Posh did complete the signings of defenders Ryan Bennett and Scott Griffiths for a combined fee of £700,000 plus Exodus Geohaghon for £40,000 and Josh Simpson for £20,000.

Anyone who'd watched these players regularly....unlike some...would know they weren't good enough to hold down first team places. Could it be that people should actually be praising BF for being able to get shot of them at a very good market price, rather than trying to heap false praise on Fergie for bringing in far too much dross.

So that's about £250,000 in profit for 2010 on transfers. Assuming that there are 35 first team squad members on an average of £1K per week, that profit will pay their wages for 7 weeks.

These are massive profits on rubbish players brought in by Fergie aren't they? At least Fry isn't giving credit where it's due when he's not busy throwing Fergie under the bus.

Well its official, Posh are once again a selling club! Selling the very players that were supposed to be "ones for the future", also interesting that new signings are now "free" transfers, obviously to help compensate for the fact that the club cant even find a shirt sponsor! how times chang

I cannot believe we actually paid £40.000 for the donkey Geohagan, I would be surprised if we manage to get the money if we manage to sell him
