Pompey match huge for Posh insists Bennett

Posh v Brighton match action. Ryan Bennett

RYAN Bennett believes Peterborough United are going into one of the most important matches of their season.

That’s how the England Under 21 international has billed a home date against Portsmouth at London Road this Saturday (28 January, 3pm).

Bennett has stressed the need to return to winning ways after back-to-back Championship defeats against Hull and Brighton.

The latter result earned the Posh squad a dressing down from manager Darren Ferguson who insists the club cannot merely settle for a bottom-half finish.

Bennett said: “I definitely think Saturday is going to be one of the biggest games of the season.

“We know where we want to finish and it’s imperative we get the three points on Saturday.

“We beat Portsmouth at their place and played very well on the night.

“We know that if we can play to our potential, we can cause damage to any side at this level.

“If we continue to work hard and train hard, I don’t see any reason why we can’t get back to winning football matches and go on another run.”

Bennett admitted defeat against Brighton at the weekend was hard to take.

The centre-back was handed the captain’s armband for the afternoon with regular skipper Grant McCann only among the substitutes on his return from injury and deputy George Boyd sidelined.

He added: “We knew the way we wanted to go about things but it didn’t quite work for us on the day.

“But we’ve got to put the disappointment of losing behind us and move on.

“Despite the result it was a nice experience to be captain. Grant is obviously going to take over the armband again now he is fit and back involved, but it is something I’d like to do permanently in the future.”

Captaincy is nothing new to the England Under 21 international. He had the role as a teenager at previous club Grimsby Town.

Bennett continued: “I’m used to the role although it is a bit different to do it here at this level.

“The responsibility people like Russell Martin and Grant McCann have had as captain in my time here is greater than that which I had at Grimsby.”
