Play-offs will stand Posh players in good stead for Hammers visit

Peterborough United news and match coverage.

DARREN Ferguson believes Peterborough United play-off passion will see them through Saturday’s big Championship clash with West Ham at London Road.

The Hammers are four points clear at the top of the table and look set for an immediate return to the Premier League under high-profile boss Sam Allardyce.

The Londoners have a dozen full internationals in their squad and several others who have represented their country at junior level.

But Posh boss Ferguson insists there is no chance of his side being intimidated by their opponents in front of a sell-out crowd at London Road.

“Games like this don’t come any bigger for us,” Ferguson admitted. “West Ham at home is the match that all our players would have looked for when the fixtures came out in the summer.

“They’re obviously a strong side who look like they will go straight back up, but my players will relish the opportunity to take them on in front of a full house at London Road.

“My players have all performed well in big games in front of big crowds in the past. The play-offs last season are proof of that so I have no worries on that score.

“There’s no denying it’s a tough game for us. West Ham will have 5,000 fans in the ground, but we will have more so it should be a great occasion as well as a great match.

“We played much better last week so we can take plenty of confidence into the game.

“We’re all looking forward to it and we’ll certainly have a go at them.”

Posh lost 1-0 to a penalty at West Ham earlier in the season, but the Championship title favourites have strengthened their squad since then.

Allardyce signed forwards Nicky Maynard and Ricardo Vaz Te on the recent transfer deadline day, but West Ham will be without free-scoring skipper Kevin Nolan who is suspended.

Posh striker Paul Taylor, who scored the goal in last Saturday’s creditable 1-1 draw at Burnley, missed training yesterday because of illness.

I think Posh will get a result against West Ham. It could be a win, a draw or a defeat.

Thinking about it and looking at the weather, they could get a postponement.
