New Posh signing Brisley’s fee could exceed £300,000

NEW Peterborough United signing Shaun Brisley, who is due to move to London Road on an emergency loan on Wednesday is relishing the opportunity to prove himself at Championship level.
The 21 year-old centre-back from League Two side Macclesfield will sign permanently in the summer as the clubs are believed to have agreed a fee in the region of £300,000.
Brisley, who will make his farewell appearance for Macclesfield at Morecambe tonight, said: “When nothing happened for me on transfer deadline day I assumed I would be staying at ‘Macc’ for the season.
“But then the club told me that Barry Fry had been in touch and that Peterborough wanted to take me. I was overwhelmed by the news to be honest, but I’m relishing the opportunity to show what I can do at a higher level.
“I made my Football League debut at 17 so I’m quite experienced, I’m an old fashioned centre-back who wins his headers and tackles hard, but I hope to show that I can play a bit as well.
“Coming to Peterborough is a step in the right direction. The manager has a reputation for giving young players a chance and of improving them so I can’t wait to get started.”
From Monday’s ET Sport: POSH could pay in excess of £300,000 to League Two side Macclesfield Town for new central defender Shaun Brisley.
The official Macclesfield website claims the transfer fee could break their club record which currently stands at the £300,000 Stockport paid for striker Rickie Lambert in 2002.
Brisley was at London Road over the weekend. The 21 year-old has agreed personal terms and will formally move to Posh on an emergency loan on Wednesday with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer.
Brisley has been at Moss Rose since the age of 12 and was the first player to graduate through every level of the Macclesfield centre of excellence and go on to become a regular first-team player.
Former Posh manager Keith Alexander handed Brisley his Macclesfield debut in March, 2008 and he’s gone on to play 141 times for the club.
Brisley would have arrived at Posh last week, but Macclesfield requested that he stayed at the club to cover a defensive availability crisis. He will play for his current club in a League Two fixture at Morecambe tomorrow before saying his goodbyes.
Brisley is highly-rated by Posh boss Darren Ferguson, but is not likely to claim a first-team place this season despite the impending departure of centre-back Ryan Bennett to Premier League Norwich City.
Ferguson is trying to bring in a more experienced centre-back to cover that gap for the rest of the current season.
Ferguson said: “It’s good to get Shaun here as he’s an excellent prospect. I wouldn’t rule out the chance of him playing this season, but I certainly expect him to make an impact next season.
“The other centre-back won’t come until Ryan has gone,”
Bennett has three games of his Posh career remaining starting tomorrow at Cardiff followed by a home clash with Bristol City on Saturday and an away game at Doncaster on February 25,
Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony claimed over the weekend that Posh paid out over £1 million to his former club Grimsby for Bennett. His initial fee was £500,000, but additional clauses, including a 20 per cent slice of the £3 million fee Norwich are understood to have paid, took the final tally over the £1 million mark.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 05:32 PMSeems a hell of a lot of money to spend on a Div 2 player. Remember Ajose? He was from Man U and has had hardly a kick for us. Lets hope Brisley does not turn out to be another waste of 300K. If so, we could nearly have afforded the undersoil heating we haven't got.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 03:12 PM#2 gilroy. I was really talking metaphorically. For a club thats desparate for cash and scrapping to stay in this league ( and would suffer massive financial hardship if we get relegated ) we have now spent £600000 on players that will not be making any contribution to keeping us up in the first place. I know we need to look to the future, but we need to confirm our Championship status first, and spending this sort of money on a player that will not play, and therefore may only play for us in league one if we go down seems foolhardy . Any way Up the Posh , Keep the Faith, lads Excellent in training .
