Meet Posh’s next Craig Mackail-Smith

Tyrone Barnett.

Tyrone Barnett.

Darren Ferguson insists striker Tyrone Barnett can score as many goals for Posh as Craig Mackail-Smith.

The Posh boss believes the club’s record signing will justify his million-pound price tag this season.

Barnett scored four goals following his move from Crawley in February last season.

He’s not off the mark so far this season, but he only made his first appearance of the campaign in the team’s last outing.

Mackail-Smith scored 99 goals for Posh before moving to Brighton for £2.5 million last summer, but Ferguson said: “There is no doubt in my mind that Tyrone can be as successful as Craig. They are very different, but Tyrone could score just as many goals for us.

“His team-mates probably have to appreciate him better and be more aware of his strengths, but I honestly believe we have another star striker on our hands. Tyrone is very strong in the air so we have to be prepared to get crosses into the penalty area, but I have seen him score many different goals.

“His display in our last game at Birmingham was very encouraging especially as it was his first game of the season.”

Barnett is expected to lead the line at Burnley on Saturday.
