McCann: Only way is up for Posh
SPORT: Birmingham v POSH (1-1) at St Andrews. McCann free kick goal and celebration
INJURED skipper Grant McCann insists Posh will use FA Cup heartbreak to mount a charge up the Championship table.
McCann, who is hopeful of returning to action when Brighton visit London Road on 21st January, was a spectator as Premier League Sunderland eased to a 2-0 third round win at Posh on Sunday.
But he attended a squad meeting called by Posh boss Darren Ferguson yesterday when the aims for the rest of the season were spelled out.
McCann described the meeting as ‘very positive’. He said: “It was a great meeting. We were all disappointed with the performance and the defeat on Sunday, but now we have to make it work for us.
“We now have nothing else to worry about this season apart from the Championship. We weren’t going to win the FA Cup, but we can make sure we finish in a good position in the league.
“We’ve done well so far, but no-one will remember the team that finishes 15th so we want to finish much higher than that.
“We know we can. We’ve played all the top teams and pushed them all. We’re also in pretty good form and we want that to carry on.
“We’ve actually won two and drawn three of our last five matches and yet we don’t seem to have gone anywhere in the table so we want to put that right.
“The meeting was very positive and the lads will be raring to go again at Hull this weekend.”
Saturday’s fixture at the KC Stadium will come too early for McCann who damaged knee ligaments in the Championship draw at Leicester on December 10.
But he is still ahead of schedule in terms of his return to action. The first medical bulletins reckoned he was unlikely to come back until February.
“The specialist told me some players have been out for two to three months with my injury,” McCann revealed.
“But I’ve had some sugar injections which have helped and I was back working on my own with the fitness coach last week.
“Yesterday I did some running and now my calves hurt like hell! I might make the Brighton game, but I’m not going to rush back as that’s not fair on me or the rest of the team.
“They’ve done great without me to be fair. We have a very strong squad these days.”

Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 09:14 AMAs 2 and 3 have said we are both scoring and conceding less. Perhaps the trick is to have McCann further forward to influence things when we attack but to have a proper defensive midfielder who is happy to sit in front of the back 4 and do the dirty work when we don't have the ball. Boyd can move back out to the left where perhaps he will get a bit more freedom and space to influence matches.

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 06:16 PMMay I suggest that quail heads down to the a14 or the 605 if he wishes to see "quality" and leave posh to the ones who appreciate championship football, UTP

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 07:36 AMI can't believe somebody is suggesting we install Warnock as manager & put Fergie as his assistant. I've heard it all now.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 09:18 PMHes one of the few good experienced players we have and has been badly missed -we have only scored 2 goals in the last 5 games now !!!! Now if were to bring in Warnock as manager today sack Fry and chage Fergie over to assisistant manager wed have a very good chance of making the play offs .He could sign some quality in the transfer window and put the donkeys out to pasture !!!

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 04:06 PMSome aspects we miss, but its no coincidence that in the league we have stopped letting in over two goals a game since his injury and woottons inclusion.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 02:03 PMIf the Sunderland match showed nothing else it was that we need McCann's class back in the team as soon as possible.
