Livermore: Posh are staying up

NEW boy Jake Livermore saw enough in half-an-hour to believe that Peterborough United can defy the critics and avoid relegation from the Championship.Debutant Livermore starred in Posh's 3-0 defeat at home to Derby on Saturday, a scoreline distorted by red cards for Craig Morgan and Ryan Bennett in the first half. Morgan was dismissed after just 28 minutes.
But Livermore, who is on loan from Spurs for the rest of the season, is convinced Posh have the ability and the spirit to climb out of the bottom three.
Livermore said: "I was impressed with what I saw. The match was ruined by the refereeing and the red cards, but until we had players sent off we were doing well.
"We played some good football and we created chances. Even when we went down to nine men we did well. The attitude of the players was spot on as we could have caved in during the second half.
"I was on loan at Derby for the first half of the season and believe me the players here compare favourably with theirs so we can definitely get out of trouble.
"I was happy with the way I played, but I can do even better. I'm looking forward to the challenge of the rest of the season."
Livermore is a certain starter for the big relegation battle at third from bottom Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Manager Mark Cooper has defensive concerns though as Morgan and Bennett will both be suspended. Cooper will pick a centre-back pairing from Gaby Zakuani, Charlie Lee and Exodus Geohaghon, providing Zakuani comes through his scheduled reserve team appearance against Luton at London Road tomorrow (2pm).
And Posh have also been tipped to avoid the drop by the club's record appearance maker. Tommy Robson, who attends many Posh matches, is prepared to put his money where his mouth is.
Robson said: "After watching the match against Derby I am more convinced than ever that Posh will stay up. Until Morgan's dismissal I felt we were playing well and the side now looks big enough, strong enough and good enough to stay up.
"I went to have a bet on us staying up yesterday, but the bookmakers wouldn't take it because they already stand to lose too much!"
Posh were trading at 4/11 favourites for the drop on betting exchange Betfair this morning.
POSH paid nothing to agents for 12 months between October 1, 2008 and September 30, 2009 according to figures released by The Football League this week.
