POSH were bad in defeat against Portsmouth at London Road on Saturday.

In fact they were very bad, but there have been worse home displays at London Road.

Alan Swann recalls the 10 worst Posh home displays he’s ever seen.

1) Feb 10, 1998

Posh 0, Doncaster 1

Division Three

Doncaster were bottom of the Football League, hadn’t won away all season and hadn’t kept a clean sheet. They were so skint they had begged, stolen and borrowed numerous players from non-league just to be able to field a team.

They still beat a Posh team who had started to slide alarmingly down the table thanks to a 94th minute winner.

2) Dec 26, 1999

Posh 0, Rotherham 5

Division Three

The Millers were so stricken by a flu outbreak they tried to call this Boxing Day game off. Sadly Posh goalie Mark Tyler was also ill and Bart Griemink had a nightmare.

Simon Davies and Matthew Etherington were hauled off at half-time and then sold to Spurs the next day.

Paul Ashworth was also sacked as Posh coach in the aftermath, but incredibly Posh went on to win promotion.

3) January 3, 1989

Posh 1, Cambridge 5

Division Four

This one hurt. A ‘Us’ team managed by Chris Turner humiliated Posh mainly thanks to a hat-trick from emerging star Dion Dublin.

Dublin had never previously scored a Football League goal.

4) November 13, 2010.

Posh 1, Charlton 5

League One

Posh fans were starting to suspect that Gary ‘Tragic’ Johnson had lost his managerial mojo after his side fell 4-0 down at half-time to Charlton.

A series of defensive blunders made this contest a horrible experience.

5) October 12, 1985

Posh 0, Northampton 5

Division Four

Ex-Posh player Phil Chard had already scored for ‘The Cobblers’ when home ‘keeper John Turner was sent off in the fifth minute.

Full-back Jimmy Holmes went in goal and Northampton went on to inflict a record Posh home defeat.

6) December 5, 1987

Posh 1, Sutton 2

FA Cup

Les Lawrence scored at both ends as Posh lost at home to non-league opposition for the first time since joining the Football League 27 years earlier.

7) March 5, 1986

Posh 0, Tranmere 1

Division Four

The threat of a re-election bid loomed large as Posh slumped to a demoralising defeat in front of just 1,512 fans at London Road.

That remains the third lowest Football League attendance in Posh history and added to the gloomy nature of the night.

8) February 7, 1990

Posh 0, Hartlepool 2.

Division Four

Pool won for the first time on their travels that season in front of another miserable midweek crowd at London Road (2,800 this time).

Posh boss Mark Lawrenson predicted the dole queue for some of his disinterested players if they didn’t improve.

9) October 20, 1999

Posh 0, Carlisle 1

Division Three

Carlisle were rubbish in the late 1990s and only survived relegation from the Football League this season thanks to an injury-time goal from their goalkeeper in their final match.

They managed to beat Posh early on in the campaign though thanks entirely to a disastrous error by Matthew Gill.

10 December 3, 1994

Posh 0, Cambridge 2

FA Cup

One of the longest chants of ‘what a load of rubbish’ accompanied the second half of this clash as Posh rarely threatened to overcome a 2-0 half-time deficit.

Manager John Still came out after the game and said his side played well thus destroying his reputation with one absurd statement.

My goodness, there have been some awful ones over the years. One I will always remember is 3-1 at home to Huddersfield, simply because it was my 21st birthday .Anyone else remember that? Oct 6th 1979. Also remember a home defeat to Halifax on the opening day of the season under Fry. It was their first game back in the league and a certain Geoff Horsfield scored for them I think.
