Star bosses in dreamland after a superb FA Vase run
PROUD Northern Star director Tony Zirpolo admits the club’s FA Vase heroics have left him in dreamland.
Star have powered into the last 16 in a fairytale first crack at a competition which comes complete with a Wembley final.
The city lads are scheduled to travel to Midlands side Tividale for a fifth round tie tomorrow but hopes of the match going ahead are not high.
A decision is expected to be made today to prevent Star from travelling unnecessarily. Tividale were forced to postpone a Tuesday night fixture and conditions are not thought to have improved.
Zirpolo said: “The competition has been absolutley fantastic for the club.
“To have come this far in our first attempt is a brilliant achievement and we would all love to keep on going.
“If we could manage to go all the way to the final it would feel like winning the lottery.
“This is a club full of good, honest, working-class people who are in it for their love of football. There are no millionaires or big backers here.”
Star set out on the Vase road all the way back in September when entering the competition at the second qualifying round stage.
A 2-1 success at fellow UCL club Rushden & Higham was the first of five Vase triumphs to date for Chris Plummer’s side, four of which have been collected on the road.
Northern Star have two coaches on stand-by to ferry the team and supporters to the Midlands in the unlikely event of the game getting the green light.
But whatever happens from here, Star have already had plenty to shout about in the Vase and other competitions this season.
They topped the UCL Premier Division table while putting together a 19-match winning run earlier in the campaign and are through to the quarter-finals as they bid to defend the UCL League Cup crown they won last season.
n HOLBEACH striker Andrew Tidswell has turned down the chance to play professional football in Finland.
Tidswell impressed while on trial at the SJK club from the city of Seinajoki but has decided against a move to the Baltic land.
He tweeted: “After a great experience and time over there, my decision is to return to the English game.”
Tidswell will be back in the Tigers fold if their mouthwatering derby date against arch local rivals Spalding (whose matches are dubbed ‘South Holland Classicos’ by ace local reporter Andrew Clucas) gets to go-ahead tomorrow.
Hopes are not high though with manager John Chand claiming there is just a ‘one per cent chance’ of the Carters Park clash taking place.
“The pitch is still covered in snow and there’s more forecast, so it’s not looking good,” said Chand.
n BLACKSTONES co-boss Darren Jarvis has toasted the signing of striker Simon Mowbray.
Stones have snapped up the man who left Spalding last week as part of a double-signing.
They’ve also drafted in young former Stamford right-back Max Avory.
Jarvis said: “It’s terrific to be able to bring in players of their calibre.”
Blackstones have little hope of entertaining Long Buckby tomorrow.
They will face St Neots in a friendly though if both clubs’ league fixtures are called off. St Neots have a 3G pitch.
