Non-League football: Petition to save the United Counties League
THE fight to save the United Counties League is gathering pace.
The competition’s Premier Division - home to six local clubs - is under threat as part of the National League System Review of Step 5 football.
It is one of two divisions recommended to be axed as part of a plan to reduce the number of competitions at that level in the country from 14 to 12.
If the plans are pushed through Blackstones, Deeping, Northern Star, Holbeach, Spalding and Yaxley will be placed in different leagues, face increased travelling time to games and much higher costs.
UCL chiefs are currently preparing a report to the Football Association to communicate their opposition to the review while an online petition in support of the UCL has already attracted close to 300 signatures.
League registration secretary and press officer Jeremy Biggs said: “Our clubs have registered their opposition to the review and the league is currently putting together a report of some 70 pages in length to do the same.
“The biggest problem, which is coming up time and again, is the financial implications this review would have for our clubs.
“They face increased costs due to more travelling to matches while also potentially losing revenue due to have less derby games.
“Clubs are saying they may have to sacrifice reserve and Under 18 teams as a result.”
