Non-league football: New Spalding boss building for a strong promotion challenge
PAT Rayment is determined to leave the United Counties League behind.
That’s why the one-time Posh youngster and former Deeping Rangers boss has accepted the job of managing ambitious Spalding United.
Rayment has succeeded the axed Andy Stanhope in the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field hotseat and believes he will have the tools to mount a strong promotion challenge next season.
Rayment said: “I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to come along and I feel this is it.
“Myself and the club have the same ambition - and that is to climb out of the UCL.
“The bottom line is that we want to win promotion and I’m here to try and make that happen.
“The club put together a top-four budget for this season but things haven’t quite worked out as they hoped.
“The budget will be in place again next season and the challenge for me is to get the club up at the top end of the table.
“Too many players at this level command too much money without delivering the goods and that won’t be happening here at Spalding on my watch.
“We will be going into battle with a good budget but it is important to squeeze every little piece of value possible out of it.”
Rayment inherits a club in decent form. Spalding have lost just one of their last eight games.
Caretaker bosses Bob Don-Duncan and Danny Hussey, who will remain as part of Rayment’s managerial team, lost only one of their five matches in-charge.
Rayment watched from the stands as Spalding edged past Thrapston 2-1 on Saturday. His first match in-charge is at table-toppers King’s Lynn on Saturday.
He added: “I’ll be looking to add a bit of experience to a young squad as soon as possible, but the lads already here will be every opportunity to show me they deserve to be here next season.
“I’m not just looking to the future though. First and foremost we want to continue the good run of late and finish the current season well.”
