Non-league football: Histon players earn the Cuckoos three precious points
CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE, Premier Division:
YAXLEY 2, DESBOROUGH 1
YAXLEY climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time since September by continuing their winter purple patch.
Gary Clipston’s men sunk bottom side Desborough in a crunch basement battle – and they had a couple of loan players from Histon to thank.
Joe Asensi made an early breakthrough before debutant Jack Sessions doubled the Cuckoos’ lead just after the break.
Desborough hit back almost immediately and saw a second ‘goal’ in stoppage time ruled out for handball as Yaxley breathed a sigh of relief and pocketed the points.
Clipston said: “We’re unbeaten in four games and have taken eight points out of a possible 12 – and that’s not relegation form.
“It’s been our best run of the season and we’re all delighted to be out of the bottom two, but we know the job of staying up is nowhere near done yet.”
A third Histon youngster, Rhys Williams, was an unused substitute for the Cuckoos.
Yaxley: Jordan, Ridout, Holland, Hailstone, Stone, De Sousa (Rosser), Challinor, Asensi, Smith (Bate), Bettinson, Sessions (Rust). Unused: Williams, Hotchkiss.
KING’S LYNN 3, SPALDING 2
NEW Tulips chief Pat Rayment was upbeat in defeat after his first match at the helm.
Rayment saw his Spalding charges perform with plenty of credit at The Walks against table-topping title favourites Lynn.
Simon Mowbray briefly fired them level with a classy strike midway through the first half and then struck again to make it 3-2 with a quarter-of-an-hour to go after a Callum Earls shot had been parried into his path.
Rayment said: “I’ve come away with a lot of positives. The lads have listened, bought into to what we’re trying to do and responded on the pitch.”
Spalding: Conroy, Ford, Earls, Fuff, Ashton, French, Brady (Harris), Thompson, Mowbray, Smith, Miller. Unused: Hussey, Cherry, Lyon.
DEEPING 3, IRCHESTER 0
THE new boys are impressing for Rangers.
Young talent Ciaran Holt enjoyed a goalscoring full debut after his recent step up from the Peterborough League and ex-Boston Town striker Alex Beck grabbed a second goal in as many Deeping outings to reach the 20-mark for the season.
They both got in on the act after defender Chris Logan had delivered the first blow against struggling Irchester.
All three Rangers goals arrived in the second half.
Rangers manager Tuncay Korkmaz said: “It’s nice to see the new lads come in and do well. It was a very professional performance and a straight-forward success.”
Deeping: Doughty, Tinkler, Jackson, Logan, Julian, Weston, Burton-Jones (Brader), Holt, Gilbert, Beck, Ginty (Heron).
BLACKSTONES 1, AFC KEMPSTON 1
STONES need to be more ruthless.
That was the view of co-boss Darren Jarvis in the wake of a stalemate against fellow top-10 side Kempston.
The visitors hit the front in the opening period but defender Tim Quy levelled soon after the restart.
Jarvis said: “It’s clear that we’re missing a clinical edge at the moment – and we’re not performing for the full 90 minutes either.”
Blackstones: Crockett, Quy, Porter, Hunnings, Goode (Holmes), Smitheringale, Avis, Burns, Pearce, Nelson, Scotcher (Strange). Unused: Cox.
Postponed: Daventry Utd v Holbeach (waterlogged pitch).
