Peterborough Sports stormed to the top of the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League Division One table last night (October 7) with an awesome display of attacking football.

They swept aside hosts Blackstones 9-0 to make it eight wins out of eight and edge a point clear of Steewart & Lloyds.

It took just four minutes for Sports to take the lead when Jamie Thurlbourne’s free-kick from the left picked out Karl Gibbs whose header was saved by Lee Crockett. But Gibbs followed up to find the net.

After seven minutes Gibbs rose highest to head in a Jordan Macleod cross and then 10 minutes later turned provider, heading a Thurlbourne cross back across goal for Avelino Vieira to apply the finishing touch with his head.

Five minutes Vieira got his second from a Thurlbourne corner and then David Cobb scored the fifth on 33 minutes after a bout of pinball in the area.

Stones made a couple of changes along with a switch to three at the back at the break, but it had little effect as Sports added to their tally a minute after the restart, Macleod latching onto a loose ball to slot home.

Vieira completed his hat-trick with a far post tap-in from a Cobb delivery from the left a minute past the hour and five minutes later Cobb scored his second from a Macleod pass.

Six minutes from time the rout was completed as Macleod accelerated past his marker for the umpteenth time to cross and the unlucky Calum Parker diverted the ball past Crockett.
