Northern Star avoided slipping on a potential Hinchingbrooke Cup banana skin last night (February 18) to reach the semi-finals.

Jordan MacLeod hit a hat-trick as the city team triumphed 4-1 at Wisbech St Mary, who play their league football two levels lower than Star, in a last-eight tie.

Avelino Vieira needed only 80 seconds to head in a MacLeod cross and break the deadlock in his first starting appearance for two-and-a-half months.

MacLeod soon doubled the lead after a Sam Murphy shot had been fumbled, but any thoughts of a stroll to victory were dismissed when Jack Brand halved the hosts’ arrears midway through the opening period.

And that is the way it stayed until the closing stages when MacLeod struck twice in the space of five minutes to complete his treble and secure Star’s passage.

They will now host either Yaxley or Bourne in the semi-finals.
