They might just need to build a bigger trophy cabinet at Peterborough Sports.

The city side marched into their third final of the season last (March 22) and they will be hot favourites to win at least two of them to add to their inevitable United Counties Division title. Under the inspirational leadership of manager Jimmy Dean, Sports are one point away from promotion and just five points from clinching top spot.

Ian Bradbury (blue) scored the winning goal for Moulton Harrox at Peterborough Sports Reserves.

But last night was a big one for Sports as they targeted the United Counties League Cup at the start of the season. Only three Division One sides had previously reached the final and none has ever won it.

But, on the evidence of last night, Sports could well break that mould. They dominated Cogenhoe, the team currently eighth in the Premier Division, and won the game 2-0 with a 23rd minute strike from Jordan Macleod and a classy finish four minutes into the second half from Josh Moreman.

Sports now await the winners of tonight’s (March 23) all-Premier Division tie between Holbeach United and Wisbech Town at Carter’s Park.

Sports are already through to the final of the Northants Junior Cup, where they will be a warm order to take out Peterborough Premier Division outfit Netherton United at the ABAX Stadium on Tuesday, April 26, and the final of the Hinchingbrooke Cup where they will take on either Deeping Rangers or Peterborough Northern Star who play their semi-final on April 12.

In Premier Division action last night, Scott Coupland’s 23rd goal of the season two minutes from time earned Deeping Rangers a 1-1 draw at lowly Wellingborough Town, but Yaxley had a bad experience in Boston, going down 4-0 to the Town side.

There was better news for March Town United as they snapped a five-game run without a win with a 3-2 home success over bottom club Needham Market Reserves in Division One of the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League. Matthew Barber, Max Matless and Dan Woods scored for ‘The Hares’ who sit 12th in the table.

But it doesn’t look like Peterborough Sports Reserves will adding to the club’s trophy haul this season. They lost their crunch Peterborough Premier Division game under the PSL floodlights against runaway leaders Moulton Harrox last night.

Joe Townsend fired unbeaten Moulton in front before Gary Gibbs equalised for Sports in the second-half. Substitute Ian Bradbury popped up with the winning goal for Moulton who are now 11 points clear at the top after stretching their unbeaten run to 22 games (21 wins).

Stamford AFC dropped a further point away from safety in the EVO Stike Northern Premier Division without playing last night, but it could have been a lot worse for ‘The Daniels’ as relegation rivals Whitby and Marine both drew.

Spalding try to breathe life into their fading Division One South play-off push at Carlton tonight.
