Three goals in the final 12 minutes enabled Wisbech to make it three United Counties Premier League wins in a row at the expense of Peterborough Northern Star last night (October 27).

The 4-1 final scoreline was harsh on the city side whose own six-game unbeaten run came to an end.

Chris Bacon scored a wonder goal for Wisbech against Peterborough Northern Star.

Chris Bacon scored a wonder goal for Wisbech against Peterborough Northern Star.

The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute when veteran Wisbech striker Chris Bacon scored with a brilliant volley from the edge of the penalty area after accepting a pass on his chest with his back to goal. An unfortunate own goal from Luke Smith, who turned in a cross from Scott Johnson, and a fine individual goal from Matt Sparrow gave the scoreline a flattering look.

Wisbech had taken the lead through Luke Wilson at the start of the second half, but Craig Smith equalised for Star almost immediately.

The Fenmen moved above Star into seventh place ahead of their big FA Vase tie at home to Midland League Premier Division side Alvechurch on Saturday (October 31).

Peterborough Sports were denied the opportunity to move seven points clear at the top of Division One as their scheduled game at Wellingborough Whitworth was postponed following a bereavement.

There will be no Hunts Senior Cup Final appearance this season for Yaxley as they were crushed 6-1 at home by St Neots at In2itive Park last night. St Neots play two levels above Yaxley and it showed. Scott Carter scored Yaxley’s goal in the first half.

There were bad defeats for Stamford AFC and Spalding United in the Evo Stik League. The Daniels remanin next-to-bottom of the Northern Premier Division after losing 5-1 at mid-table Rushall Olympic, while ‘The Tulips’ are down to 10th in Division One South after losing 3-0 at home to second-placed Shaw Lane Aquaforce.

New striker Andrew Phillips did score a screamer for Stamford on his debut in the final minute.

Holbeach United and Deeping Rangers can move up the United Counties Premier Division table tonight (October 28) with positive results at Sleaford and Huntingdon respectively.

A point would take Holbeach into third place, while a win for Deeping would move them above Peterborough Northern Star and Wisbech into seventh.
