He is a very inexperienced manager, but Peterborough Sports boss Jimmy Dean is not naive enough to predict United Counties League Division One dominance for his side.

There are plenty of others willing to do that for him, but Dean will only go as far as saying he is happy with his squad as the club set out on the promotion trail at home to Irchester on Saturday (August 8).

“We have built a very talented, but very young squad,” Dean stated. “If I have a concern it would be a lack of an old head to do the talking and organising on the pitch.

“I could do it if my knee was better. Lewis Webb might be the man as he’s been around a bit, but he’s still only 25.

“I’m still confident we will enjoy some good results though. We’ve invested in the future by signing so many young players.

“I have a very talented 19-man squad which I will have to whittle down to 16 on Saturday.

“I’m not looking forward to that because I will have to make some tough decisions, but I have tried to be very fair to everyone in the summer.

“We’ve used the friendlies to give everyone a chance to stake a claim.”

Dean, a former Peterborough Northern Star player, is in his first managerial job. He assisted Chris Plummer at Sports in the second-half of last season.

Sports completed their friendly programme with a 3-2 win over Northern Star last weekend with goals from Andy Boome, Avelino Viera and Webb.

Sports also host Blackstones in an early-season Division One derby on Tuesday, August 11.

Blackstones are away to Burton Park Wanderers on Saturday, while Bourne, who have much the same squad as last season, host Buckingham.

Buckingham were beaten last weekend in an early Division One fixture.

They went down 5-2 to last season’s Peterborough Premier Division champions Oakham United who were making their United Counties League bow.
