Local derby revenge for Star

Star goalkeeper Nick Conroy saves at the feet of Deeping striker Ash Stevens

Star goalkeeper Nick Conroy saves at the feet of Deeping striker Ash Stevens

A late penalty from Billy Smith earned Northern Star a 1-0 win over disappointing Deeping in a United Counties Premier League clash at Outgang Road tonight (October 30).

Smith fired home from the spot seven minutes from time after Deeping defender Spencer Tinkler hauled down Star substitute Adam Scotcher. Tinkler was shown a red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

It was sweet revenge for Star who had lost to their local rivals 3-1 at home earlier in the season. The city side were largely untroubled at the back once Matt Heron had seen a ‘goal’ disallowed in the first-half for pushing.

Spalding’s title push suffered a knock as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Sleaford despite dominating possession for almost the entire 90 minutes.

Sleaford opened the scoring after five minutes and although Francis Green equalised in the first minute of the second-half they could not find a winner. Both sides finished with 10 men after two late red cards with Tom James the guilty party for Spalding.

Spalding have moved above Holbeach into second place on goal difference, but fell further behind leaders St Ives who won tonight. Holbeach will reclaim second place by taking at least a point from tomorrow’s derby at Blackstones.

Yaxley were beaten 2-0 at Kempston. Both goals arrived in the second half.

Huntingdon are also in Premier Division action tomorrow at home to Wellingborough.

Understrength Stamford were beaten by a 65th minute goal at Evo Stik South leaders Coalville.
