HUNTINGDON 4

ROTHWELL C 2

HUNTINGDON are basking in the glory of their best-ever league position.

Town charged to the top of the Division One table for the very first time by sinking Corinthians on Saturday.

Manager Ricky Marheineke said: “I didn’t know until after the game that it is the first time the club has ever been top of the league at this level of football.

“It is a great achievement for everyone involved and a big moment in the history of the club, but we have to ensure that this is not the highlight of our season.

“Being top in January doesn’t give you the title or promotion, so we have to ensure we continue the hard work that has got us into this position.”

Town hopped above previous leaders Harborough by virtue of a superior goal difference after delivering another power-packed attacking performance.

Loan hitman Niks Salvanieks continued his rich vein of form with a first-half brace while top-scorer Declan Rogers also got in on the act.

Dan Moyes completed Town’s tally early in the second half although Marheineke was left frustrated by defensive slips which gifted the visitors a goal in each half.

Marheineke added: “We were exceptional going forward but giving away silly goals is something we have to address.

“Top sides will punish us and we can’t afford for that to happen.”

Huntingdon: Beeny, Yeomans, R. Spencer, Waterworth, Bowen, Moyes, Dear, Jordan (Eason), Rogers, Salvanieks, Drane (Warwick). Unused: S. Spencer.

CORNARD 0

MARCH 2

A MEDIOCRE display came complete with a magical reward as March climbed to the top of the First Division standings.

Boss Brett Whaley admitted his men were nowhere near their best when struggling past lowly Cornard, but it was enough to carry them to the summit with previous leaders Thetford being beaten by fellow promotion hopefuls Godmanchester.

Whaley said: “We never expected to be in this position at this stage of the season given where we are as a club on and off the pitch.

“Unfortunately we don’t have a game this weekend so we will probably only be top for a week but we’ll make sure we enjoy the moment.

“We’re delighted to be leading the way but we really could have done with Thetford winning that game against Godmanchester.

“We were pinning our promotion hopes on them racing clear and us trying to hang on to second place, but it hasn’t quite worked out that way.”

Luke Pepper fired March ahead from the penalty spot on the hour after Ash Brand had been brought down and Stu Anderson sealed the points with a smart finish with 10 minutes remaining.

March: Butcher, Cook (Sutton), Welcher, Cooke, Lenton, Anderson (Norman), Jenkins, Rothery, Brand (Hepworth), Odain, Pepper.
