Deeping look set to raid Peterborough Sports again

DEEPING manager Tuncay Korkmaz is plotting a third transfer raid of the season on leading Peterborough League club Peterborough Sports.

The Rangers chief has already snapped up left-winger Kevin Brader and midfield talent Ciaran Holt from the city club - and now he’s going back for Matt Barber.

His latest target can play anywhere on the right-hand side and that will be useful for Deeping with current right-back Matty Evans departing at the end of the month to join the Army.

Korkmaz said: “I’ve spoken briefly to Matt and I’m very optimistic that he will make the same move across to Deeping as Kevin and Ciaran did.”

Deeping will be under orders not to get caught cold in the freezing cold if their Saturday fixture goes ahead.

They are scheduled to host relegation-haunted Yaxley in a derby date at Outgang Road and Korkmaz is anxious to avoid a repeat of their last encounter against struggling opponents. Deeping crashed to a 4-1 defeat at bottom side Desborough last month.

Korkmaz said: “We had virtually a full squad that day at Desborough and there are no excuses for what happened. It just goes to show that if you don’t perform in this league, you will be beaten.”

n HUNTINGDON Town are celebrating an awards double.

Manager Ricky Marheineke scooped the UCL Division One manager-of-the-month gong for January and Declan Rogers won the player-of-the-month accolade.

Town are scheduled to travel to Harborough tomorrow for a top-of-the-table showdown for the second successive Saturday.

Bourne host Wellingborough side Whitworth at the same level.

n STEVE Appleby has celebrated his second anniversary at the Wisbech Town helm by revealing his burning desire to take the club onto the next level.

No-nonsense Appleby has transformed the Fenmen from a side struggling at the wrong end of the Ridgeons Premier Division to one challenging for promotion since taking charge in February, 2010.

He also guided the club to Ridgeons League Challenge Cup glory last season - their piece of silverware since the mid 1990’s.

Appleby said: “We are undoubtedly heading in the right direction and I’m reasonably happy with the job I have done so far.

“We reached a county cup final at the end of my first season and then won the League Challenge Cup last year which was obviously a great moment.

“The Wisbech fans have been good to me. They are realistic and understand you can’t go from being a bottom side to a top one overnight.

“We are not out of the promotion race this season and I would like to think I can take the club onto the next level.

“I remember saying when I first came to the club that it would probably take three years to get into the position we wanted to be and I feel we’re still on course.”

Appleby says there is ‘no chance’ of Wisbech’s home date against Diss going ahead on Saturday. The Elgoods Fenland Stadium pitch remained covered in snow yesterday.

Ridgeons League chiefs were yesterday understood to be considering calling off all matches scheduled for this weekend.

That would also affect March Town’s home clash against Bury Town in the First Division.

n STAMFORD have snapped up a new defender.

Centre-back Dean Whiley has joined from Long Eaton United.

Stamford go to Leek in Evo-Stik League Division One South tomorrow.
