Stamford ended a run of five Northern Premier Division games without a win in fine style yesterday (January 3).

The Daniels triumped 2-1 at Buxton thanks to goals from Jordan Smith and former Posh youngster Dan Lawlor. Buxton had started the day in second place.

Smith headed home Lawlor’s cross in the 32nd minute to put Stamford in front and Lawlor made it 2-0 with a cracking free-kick strike on the hour.

Lawlor completed an eventful day by collecting the second of two soft yellow cards soon after his goal, but the 10 men held out until the 88th minute when a dubious penalty allowed Buxton back into the game.

Stamford survived nine minutes of added time before completing their first Premier Division win since November 22.

In-form Spalding’s Division One clash at Gresley was postponed an hour before the scheduled kick off because of a waterlogged pitch and several United Counties League matches also fell foul of the weather.

Peterborough Northern Star took advantage of inactive rivals to move up to fourth in the Premier Division with a 6-3 win at Oadby. Teenage hotshot Jordan Macleod claimed a hat-trick in the final 10 minutes of the match to break a 3-3 deadlock.

Phil Stebbing (2) and Nick Davey scored the other Star goals against lowly opposition.

Huntingdon ended a run of four matches without a win by leaving Sleaford with three points. New signing Danny Barker and top scorer Declan Rogers scored the Huntingdon goals in a 2-1 win.

There was almost an almighty shock in the League Cup as Premier Division giants Holbeach required two late goals to beat Division One outfit Rothwell Corinthians. The underdogs led for 79 minutes after taking the lead in the third minute before Livo Dube and Lee Beeson scored late goals for the Tigers.

Second-placed Holbeach host third-placed Yaxley at Carter’s Park in the pick of the Premier Division midweek action on Wednesday (January 7).

Yaxley’s Hunts Senior Cup semi-final against St Neots yesterday was conceded by the Saints who couldn’t raise a side. Yaxley have now reached the May final without playing a single game!

The other semi-final betweem Godmanchester and St Ives was postponed because of the weather.
