Youth football: Rangers record first win in some style
UNDER 16: DEEPING Rangers produced a super second-half show against Northborough to snatch their first win of the season.
After a lacklustre opening, Rangers came to life after the break with Lawrie Bacon (2), Matt Jarvis and Ashton Capes hitting the goals in a 4-0 win.
The result gets Deeping’s season up and running as Pat O’Keeffe’s side moved clear of the bottom two.
O’Keeffe said: “We were really struggling in the first half and you could see the lads hadn’t had a game for a while.
“But they took on board what we told them at half-time and really upped it in the second half.
“It has been a frustrating season as a couple of teams pulled out and the fixtures were not re-arranged which has left us with some big gaps between games so it was important to get that first win on the board when we got the chance.”
HUNGATE missed the chance to go top of the Division One table after being held to a 2-2 by Yaxley.
Lewis Clayton and William Ketteringham both hit the target for Hungate but the League Cup holders secured a point thanks to goals from Kelton Stringer and Dane Hammond.
IN Division Two, Luke Brodie scored twice as Peterborough Sports opened their 2012 account with a 3-1 win against Thorney Colts.
Skipper James Thomas got the other goal for Sports who moved six points clear at the top of the table with one of their best footballing displays of the season.
Manager Dave Foster said: “In terms of our ball work, that was one of our best performances of the season. The whole team passed the ball really well and the movement was excellent.
“The only disappointing thing was that we didn’t score a few more goals but everything else was spot on and it really shows we are moving in the right direction.”
Second-placed Whittlesey’s title hopes took a hit after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Eye. Despite going into the clash at Lindisfarne Road as favourites, Whittlesey were undone thanks in large part to Charles Mucklin who scored twice in a 4-2 win to boost Eye’s promotion prospects.
FARCET kept their Division Three promotion bid on track after fighting out a 2-2 draw against Wisbech Acorns.
Pietro Scibelli and Aiden Bingham scored the goals for Farcet who picked up a point to move to within two points of the league leaders Ketton.
OUNDLE let a two-goal lead slip away as they crashed out of the Northants Cup after losing 5-3 against FC Aztecs.
Goals for Michael Baker and Joseph Hamm saw Oundle storm into a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes and the Division One outfit almost made it 3-0 when Jacob Costello rounded the keeper only for his shot to be cleared off the line.
Buoyed by the let off Aztecs stormed back and midway through the second half they led 4-2. A Tom Burton penalty gave Oundle renewed hope but the visitors got the extra security of a fifth goal to secure their passage into the quarter final.
Oundle boss Nigel Fox said: “It was disappointing and had we made it 3-0 it could have been different. But fair play to Aztecs they played well and superior fitness was the thing that told in the end.”
