Youth football: Glinton put themselves back in the title race
UNDER 18: GLINTON put themselves right back into the Division Two title mix with an impressive 3-1 win at Hampton.
After taking the lead through a Gregory Dunn penalty in the first half, Glinton almost conceded from the spot shortly after the restart but keeper Dan George pulled off a great stop to keep the visitors’ slender lead intact.
Goals for Harry Hinks and Jack Davenport then made the points safe despite Hampton earning a late consolation thanks to a goal from Kyle Ryan.
After slipping up against Rippingale and Folkingham when they led 3-0 at half-time only to lose 4-3, Sunday’s impressive performance suggests Glinton are back in the groove. And with the top of the table now back in his team’s sights, manager Peter Rice is looking forward to make or break games against Holbeach and leaders Deeping Claret over the next few weeks.
He said: “We learnt our lessons from the Rippingale game and since then the lads have really been applying themselves well in games and that was definitely the case against Hampton on Sunday.
“We have now given ourselves a real chance to be involved in the title chase. The league is wide open and I certainly think we have the quality in the squad to compete with anyone when everyone is at the top of their game.
“The next two games will be make or break. I’ll know what we are capable of then and if we can definitely have a shot at the title.”
SPALDING spread the goals around as they took a vital step towards securing their place in Division Two for next season.
James Allan, Jack Bettinson, Kyle McMahon, Lee Haslam, Aaron Giardelli, Ben Peppercorn and Aaron Cooper were all on target as the young Tulips beat Rippingale and Folkingham 7-1 to move six points clear of the drop zone.
Manager Andy Coaten said: “We huffed and puffed a bit for the first 40 minutes but a couple of late goals before half-time really set us up for the second half when we ran away with it.
“It was a slick performance and it’s not often you see seven different scorers so I was very pleased about that. But the most important thing is we got the win against one of the teams in the relegation places.
“We want to be in this division again next season for our last year of Youth League football and I reckon a couple more results like that will see us safe.”
