Under 16: TEN-MAN Netherton missed one penalty and scored two as they booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Northants Cup with a 3-0 win against Peterborough Sports.

Netherton had Daniel Powell sent off at The Grange but still managed to find a way to win with Josh Sanders missing a penalty and scoring two either side of a goal from Nathan Parillon.

After a scrappy first half against city rivals Sports - the only other local side left in the competition - the game sparked into life following Powell’s sending off.

Having failed to break down Sports with a full team, Netherton finally got their noses in front when Sanders fired the home side ahead from the penalty spot.

Parillon then finished off a neat team move to make it 2-0 minutes later before Sanders fluffed his lines when the hosts were awarded another penalty.

But when the referee pointed to the penalty spot for the third time Sanders made no mistake from 12 yards to make the game safe.

Netherton have tasted glory in the Northants Cup before when they won the competition in the Under 14 age group, but manager Stephen Powell knows his side will have their work cut out after being drawn away at Blisworth Youth in the next round.

Powell said: “We struggled against Sports in the first half. They are a physical, well-organised side and we struggled. But we changed it round after the break and slung an extra man in midfield which helped.

“Strangely enough the sending off didn’t seem to make much difference and in the end we were well worth the win and obviously very pleased to be in the quarter-finals.

“I have had a look at Blisworth’s results this season and they have not lost a game in the Northampton Youth Alliance so that will be another tough game.

“But you expect nothing less at this stage of the competition and I am sure the boys will all be up for the game.”

WITH Division Two leaders Peterborough Sports on county duty, Whittlesey took advantage to close the gap at the top of the table.

Jack Osman, Aaron Green, Jack Bates, Max Amos and Ollie Long - who struck with a 25-yard free-kick - all got their names on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win for the promotion hopefuls.

Manager Steve Pullan said: “With five games left for us, we will just have to take it one game at a time.

“We can’t rely on anyone doing us a favour even though there are some good sides in this league and results are strange at times when you look at league positions.

“We have got to look after ourselves and chase the top spot while keeping the teams below us at arm’s length.”
