Weekend football fixtures are badly hit by the big freeze

THE local football programme this weekend has already been decimated.

The Peterborough & District Junior Alliance League have called off all matches in their competition scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday. Ties in the junior Peterborough Football Association (PFA) cups have also been postponed and will now take place next weekend.

That decision came shortly after Peterborough City Council pulled the plug on all junior and senior matches due to be played on it’s pitches this weekend at Werrington, Bushfield, Bretton Park, Ringwood, Campbell Drive, Itter Park, Thorney Park and Lawson Avenue. Matches at the Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey are also off on both days.

Junior Alliance chairman David Burgess said: “We don’t envisage conditions improving anywhere near enough to allow football matches to take place.

“We felt it best to make the decision to postpone all our matches in the interests of child safety and to allow people to make other plans.”

And Burgess hopes to quickly see the back of the current cold snap although he insists there is no need yet to press the panic button in terms of completing the season on schedule.

Burgess added: “We always allow for losing four weekends to bad weather during the course of a season so the situation is not too bad just yet. Hopefully this weekend will be the last one we have to lose though.”

Elsewhere non-league clubs across the area have little hope of matches going ahead as the cold temperatures continue to bite while the Peterborough Sunday Morning League may follow the Junior Alliance’s lead later today in cancelling all remaining fixtures that weren’t due to be played on city council pitches.
