Stilton beat the big freeze to reach county cup final

THERE was no ‘snow’ stopping Stilton United on Saturday.

The cold winter snap caused a near total wipeout of all but three scheduled football matches locally – and two of those to go ahead involved Stilton sides.

And the Stilton first team didn’t waste their moment in the limelight when booking their place in the final of the Hunts Benevolent Cup.

Simon Denning struck twice with Nick Lee, Phil Wells and Richard Baines grabbing the other goals as Great Paxton were seen off 5-2 down at Leading Drove.

Stilton will face either Huntingdon Town Reserves or Needingworth in the April final when they could well complete a county honours double.

They’re also through to the Hunts Scott Gatty Cup showpiece on March 21 where they will face fellow locals Powerleague AFC in an all-Peterborough & District League affair.

Stilton Reserves didn’t fare so well on Saturday when going down 5-0 at the hands of Peterborough Rovers Reserves in Division Four of the Peterborough & District League.

Lee Defraine (2), Garry Cook, Jamie Mumford and Shaun Thomas did the damage in a fixture played at Werrington.

That was also the venue for the other game to go ahead – a 4-0 Division Five success for Thorney Reserves over hosts Parkway Eagles.

Dylan Bayford and Liam Fountain both bagged braces for the village side.

All 11 local non-league sides were forced out of action on Saturday. The United Counties League derby clash between Yaxley and Holbeach was postponed due to an unplayable pitch just yards from where Stilton did manage to host their county semi-final.

March Town did at least manage a spot of training down at the Powerleague centre at Stanground College.

On the junior football front only two games survived - both on the all-weather pitch at The Grange on Saturday where Netherton Pheonix Under 9s beat Werrington Blue 3-2 and Netherton United Under 10s beat Gunthorpe Navy 2-0.

And, following heavy snowfall overnight into Sunday, all senior, youth and junior matches scheduled for yesterday in the area were postponed.

It was the first weekend of major disruption this season.
