THE big freeze may have put an end to the bulk of the weekend football programme, but not quite all of it.
There was one corner of the city where a group of hardy young footballers braved the elements and down at The Grange they made light of the conditions to serve up a real cracker.
Making the most of the club’s 3G pitch, Netherton Phoenix took on White Zone champions Werrington Blue.
And despite the Blues coming into the game boasting a 100 per cent record in the league and cup this season, it was Netherton who emerged victorious thanks to two goals from Harry Witney and one for Spencer Ingram.
Manager Andy Patterson said: “To become the first team this season to beat Werrington is a great achievement, all the more so because we came from two goals behind to do it.
“Defensively I thought we were superb with James Cooper really standing out for us at the back but all the lads put in a terrific performance for us against an excellent Werrington team.”
After a positive start from both teams it was the home side who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Witney hit the Werrington crossbar with his powerful shot.
But it was the visitors who seemed to have taken control of the game shortly after the break when Sam Gardiner broke clear of the Netherton defence before burying his shot past Edward Selby.
Minutes late Ewan Drew made it 2-0 when his shot flew into the top corner to put Werrington on course for their 13th league win in a row.
Netherton had other ideas, however, and they were soon back in the game when Witney bundled home in the box from Ingram’s corner. The goal gave the home side a big lift and before long they were back on level terms when Witney finished with clinical precision after being sent clear by Ben Patterson.
And with less than five minutes to go Netherton snatched the win from another corner. This time it was Dan Laxton who placed the kick onto the edge of the six yard box where Ingram struck to make it 3-2.
Werrington boss Keith Ferris said: “I have got no complaints about the result. It was a fantastic game of football and a great advert for under 9 football in the city.
“When we played them last time at home we only beat them 2-1 so we always knew it was going to be tough. We had our chances at the end and Ewan Drew and Dan Adcock both went close but in the end it turned out to be unlucky 13 for us.
“Hopefully we can get back to winning ways in the quarter-finals of the League Cup this weekend.”
