Peterborough League roundup: Drove boost survival hopes with a 6-3 win
PARSON Drove boosted their survival prospects by winning a nine-goal thriller at Oakham United.
The Fen lads’ 6-3 success even featured a rare appearance from 50 year-old manager Nick Markillie as a substitute.
Markillie was forced to go on after Drove lost Barney Shales due to a dislocated shoulder and his replacement, Steve Hanlon, with a hamstring problem.
A couple of James McManus goals - including a free-kick special - and others from Shales, Hanlon, Chris Ward and James Patrick saw Drove home.
Markillie said: “The game was so open it was untrue - it could have finished 12-12.
“It’s a good win for us and we need more of them. I definitely think we’re good enough to stay up.”
Drove remain three points from safety after Whittlesey edged past Leverington.
Early substitute Sam Pell and debutant Danny Hotchkiss struck in a 2-1 success over Leverington.
“It was a big result for us,” said Whittlesey manager Paul Humphries.
Leverington reduced their arrears through debutant Daniel Fysh who has joined from Wisbech St Mary but couldn’t convert other chances.
Leverington boss Stuart Webb admitted: “We played pretty well going forward considering it was our first game for six weeks, but we couldn’t finish for toffee.”
Rikki escapes a serious injury in horror tackle
ALCONBURY have breathed a sigh of relief after defender Rikki Howden escaped serious injury on Saturday.
Howden was caught by what general manager Mick Tarft claimed was a ‘knee-high’ challenge during a 4-1 home loss at the hands of Uppingham.
“I really feared he had dislocated his knee-cap,” said Tarft. “It was one of the worst challenges you’ll ever see, but luckily he is relatively okay.”
The incident went unpunished by referee Reg Parker. George Pearson scored Alconbury’s goal.
Happy Harrox coast to victory
MOULTON Harrox eased past Crowland in an all-Lincolnshire clash.
Steve Mastin, Bobby Patterson and Tom Panton settled the contest 3-0 in Harrox’s favour.
Co-boss Nigel Steadman said: “It wasn’t the greatest of games but we’re pleased with the result and clean sheet.”
