Peterborough League dish out over £1,000 in fnes
Sports news from The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport
PETERBOROUGH League chiefs have issued a staggering £1,145 in fines at one meeting.
The majority of that total - £795 - is made up of disciplinary cases in the first half of the season.
The club hit hardest in the pocket is Whittlesey who have been fined a total of £220 over the postponement of a Premier Division clash against Eye Sports on December 17.
League chiefs handed out a £100 fine and a one point deduction for the late cancellation of that clash when Whittlesey couldn’t raise a team. Eye Sports have also been awarded three points as the match, in line with league rules, will not be replayed.
The remaining £120 fine is handed out to Whittlesey for flouting league rules by allowing their reserve team to complete a fixture on the same day.
The reserve team match should have been postponed and the first-team fixture fulfilled. A £100 chunk of the punishment is suspended until the end of next season.
A number of teams have been hit with fines and points deductions for fielding ineliglbe players - most notably Peterborough Sports Reserves.
The Division Three outfit are to appeal a total fine of £180 and an eight-point deduction after selecting an ineligble player for three successive September matches.
League press officer Keith Sharp said: “We take no pleasure from fining and deducting points from clubs, but there has to be a procedure and a deterrent in place.
“Fielding an ineligible player is an offence that incurs costs for opponents and the league alike.
“All teams have the right to appeal and if it is proved to us we have issued a fine wrongly, we will gladly rescind it.”
The remaining £350 of the grand £1,145 total was racked up through administrative errors in December alone.
Offences such as handing in the team-sheet late to the referee and failure to correctly complete a result sheet are punished with £20 fines. Other errors, including failing to tick the Respect box on the team-sheet, warrant a £10 fine.
On those errors Sharp added: “There is no disputing the figure is very high, but we have given teams advice and support yet they are still making mistakes.
“This is a reason why we are changing our administrative system for next season so as the majority of these fines can be taken out of the equation.”
