A BUDDING young football talent is toasting an international call-up.

Thirteen year-old Jessica Driscoll has been named in the English Schools Under 15 girls squad.

The Nene Park Academy pupil, who plays her club football for Arsenal, came through two rounds of trials and a selection match to earn her place in the national squad for a tournament against Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Holland and host nation the Republic of Ireland in Dublin in early April.

Jessica got into football through her father, Pat Dooner, a well-known player on the local circuit for many years.

“I couldn’t be more proud of her,” said Dooner, himself an Arsenal fan. “She is really excited about being in the squad.”

Jessica, of Orton Malborne, was initially a free-scoring striker when starting out in the game with local club Netherton Diamonds at Under 10 level but has been converted into a defender at Arsenal.

She is now comfortable operating at either centre-half or right-back and has made terrific progress with the Gunners.

Jessica won the player-of-the-season award for the entire Arsenal junior girls set-up at the end of her first season with the club and has continued to shine in the current campaign.

Jessica hasn’t followed completely in her father’s footsteps though. She is a Liverpool supporter and her favourite player is Fernando Torres.

Pat is keen to attract sponsorship to help finance’s Jessica’s football. They have to make at least two trips to Boreham Wood for training each week and then have matches around the country at weekends. Anyone interested can contact her mum Rebecca Driscoll on 07849 799140.

Why should she need sponsorship? Arsenal want her to play then they should pay - invest in youth (male and female) instead of wasting millions on their over-paid journeymen
