Lockhart is the Whittlesey hero in dramatic county cup win
SUPERSUB Jake Lockhart was the hero of the hour as Whittlesey toppled Soham Rangers to book their place in the last four of the Under 18 Cambridgeshire Cup.
Lockhart came off the bench to grab the second-half equaliser and when the game went to penalties he kept his nerve to score the decisive sudden-death spot-kick.
Whittlesey goalkeeper Daniel Swan also played a vital role with a superb save in the shoot-out to set up a famous win for his side.
And this was no lucky result for Whittlesey who went into the game as heavy underdogs but could easily have secured the win in normal time.
Tom Green hit the bar with a first-half header and after the break a Joe Butterworth freekick rattled the woodwork.
So while his team only just scraped through after drawing 1-1 and nicking the penalties 6-5, assistant manager Terry Austin felt his side were well worth the win.
He said: “Jake and Daniel both had great games, but the whole team were fantastic - and they had to be as Soham are a superb team, probably one of the best in the area.”
Whittlesey now face Coates in the semi-final.
