Ladies football roundup: All-Peterborough county cup final is on the cards

AN all-Peterborough final is on the cards in the Northants Cup.

Northern Star both breezed into the semi-finals of the county competition at the weekend to join city rivals Peterborough Sports - and they’ve avoided each other in the last-four draw.

Star saw off Kettering Town Ladies 4-2 despite a stuttering display in their quarter-final tie.

Winger Gee Sturgess laid on equalisers for Jade Ramm and Julie Ikeda before firing Star haead with a 20-yard volley. Rachel Adkin completed the scoring.

Star have been drawn away to fellow East Midlands Premier Division side Daventry Town in the last four. Peterborough Sports host Northampton Town Ladies.

PETERBOROUGH Sports suffered extra-time heartache in the Eastern Region Women’s League Cup.

Sports bowed out after suffering a 4-3 loss at Billericay Town.

Two Lesley-Ann Seaman goals and a Lou Nicholls effort had seen the city side made a rousing comeback in normal time, but their depleted side was eventually condemned to defeat in the additional half-an-hour.

Manager Paul Redgate: “The ladies are showing a lot of toughness at the moment with such a depleted squad. They all want to play for each other and hopefully results will go our way sooner rather than later.”

NETHERTON Diamonds climbed to the top of the Northants Women’s League at the weekend - thanks to a rip-roaring scoring spree.

A 4-0 success over Cogenhoe & Kingsthorpe - lit-up by a three-minute hat-trick from Zoe Watkins - was enough to carry the city side to the summit, but it was far from a stroll.

Netherton were reliant on a couple of fine saves from keeper Maxine Wren-Hart when the match was still goalless. They eventually hit the front when Tash Applegate earned and converted a penalty before Watkins took centre-stage.

Netherton are a point clear of previous leaders Kettering Town who boast four matches in hand.

NETHETON Diamonds Under 13s proved their jewels in the footballing crown - by sinking the Corby Gems Sapphires.

A hat-trick from Olivia Nunziata and an Emma Pollard double-strike inspired the city girls to a 5-4 success in the Mid-Shires League clash.

Keeper Katie Cooper also earned rave reviews for a crucial penalty save.

NETHERTON Diamonds Under 16s breezed into the quarter-finals of the Northants Cup in their first outing of 2012.

Lauren Johnson (4), Katie Steward (2), Bianca Kennewell and Tiffany Lynn did the damage in a 8-1 win at Kettering.

AFC Whittlesey Under 15s continued their winning start to 2012 in the Cambs League.

Whittlesey broke the deadlock with a routine from the training ground that was finished by Sofia Green when seeing off Comberton 5-1.

Gemma Fitzjohn and Annie Posnett then added a brace apiece to complete the five-star haul.

AFC Whittlesey: Sophie Powell, Charley Ireland, Sofia Green, Stacie Boon, Georgia Coulson, Gemma Fitzjohn, Charlie Hawkins, Stacy Rowley, Annie Posnett, Eden White, Rosie Mallows, Taylor Reade, Leah Anthony.
