Kestrels swoop to reach the League Cup final

UNDER 18

NETHERTON Kestrels showed their killer instinct against Deeping Claret to book their place in the League Cup final.

The cup holders looked razor-sharp as they spilled the Claret with Amar Zamir, Rhys Howden, Lewis Hemmings, Shane Cooke and Jamal Williamson all on target.

And with their big Northants Cup semi-final looming on Sunday against Kettering Town, going through the motions at Outgang Road provided the perfect warm-up for county cup combat according to manager James Hooper.

He said: “It was a really good performance and I am particularly pleased with the way we are killing teams off at the moment.

“Once we got the first goal I knew we would get a few more and we were never under pressure.

“We definitely had one eye on the game against Kettering on Sunday too.

“We have had to put together a new back four after we lost Will Hodgson with a broken jaw a few weeks back. But they have been performing really well in recent weeks and looked really solid which has helped us find that winning mentality. Hopefully it will stand us in good stead on Sunday.”

n WAITING for the Kestrels in the League Cup final will be Wisbech St Mary Purple who beat big rivals Whittlesey 2-0.

Despite not having had a league game in seven weeks the Saints blew away the cobwebs with Ben Lewis and Ben Crowson hitting the goals to set up a potentially sizzling showpiece.

Manager Mark Miller said: “It has been a really difficult period for us as I have lost a couple of players because we haven’t had a game for so long. So it was good to get out there and get a result against a team who we have built up a nice little rivalry with over the years.

“We can’t wait for the final now against Netherton. It will be strange going into the game as underdogs but I am sure it will be a cracking game anyway.”

And the Saints have another big game to look forward to after they booked their place in the semi-finals of the Cambs Cup on Tuesday night.

Two second-half goals from Jacob Smith sealed the holder’s passage through to the last four where they take on Histon for a place in the final.
