Junior football: Wasps buzzing after fine draw with big rivals
UNDER 10: WASPS will need to be at their best for the rest of the season if they hope to buzz off to the top flight.
Elliott Ledger, Harry Howard and Louie Venni were all on target in a 3-3 draw against Blue Zone promotion rivals Netherton. Evan Walters (2) and Sulaiman Saleem were the Netherton scorers.
With leaders Gunthorpe looking nailed on for the title, Wasps know they are playing for one of two places likely to secure a place in Division One next season.
Manager Nigel Venni said: “We were on fire before Christmas but we have gone off the boil a bit so it was important that we picked up a point against Netherton. We play Gunthorpe next which is going to be a really hard game and after that I think we have to win our four remaining games to get promoted.
“But anything can happen with lads this age. Last season we thought we might finish third but we didn’t get the results and dropped to sixth so while winning four out of five, we will just have to wait and see how it all pans out.”
WERRINGTON threw a great big spanner in the works for Northern Star Black by pulling off a shock 1-0 win in the Red Zone.
A second-half goal from William Tilbrook secured the result for Werrington against Star who now face an uphill battle to force themselves back into title contention.
Werrington boss Jeremy Wood said: “We are getting back to full strength now which is making a big difference to us defensively. My son Laurence is back in the side now after over a month off with meningitis while our other defender Vincent Hill is also back after breaking a shoulder.
“But the whole team played brilliantly and we were of course delighted with the result, although I would have to say Star were under-strength and their lack of substitutes definitely told in the second half.”
THE biggest beneficiaries of Werrington’s win were Powerleague who are now six points clear at the top of the table.
Two goals from Bradley Simpson, one each for Liam Catton, Callum Ingledew and Adulie Balde and an own goal added up to a 6-0 win for the city side at Stamford.
Manager Matt Catton said: “When I got the phone call saying that Werrington had beaten Star I must admit I was shocked. But they have done us a massive favour as it gives us a bit of breathing space.
“Five wins from our last seven games will do it for us but we don’t want to get too focused on that and must make sure the boys just go out and enjoy their football which is the main thing.”
BOURNE Claret kept up the pressure on White Zone leaders Arsenal with a comfortable 4-1 win against Rippingale and Folkingham.
Top-scorer Ted Holliday led the way for the Clarets with a hat-trick while Josh Hammond got the other goal.
n GOALS from Daniel Bawa, Callum Dalliday and Stephen Baldwin secured a 3-1 win for Paston Flyers against Thorpe Wood.
The win keeps the Flyers’ Green Zone title hopes alive but leaders Parkside Blue will take some catching. They beat Wittering 4-2 with goals from Edward Ingham (2), Cameron Long and Jake Fitzgerald to move 10 points clear at the top.
