Junior football: Star boss enjoys one of the best days of his life

UNDER 13: PETERBOROUGH Northern Star Red manager Marvin Bennett saw his side reach the final of the PFA Cup and then described it as one of the best days of his life.

Awais Ahmed and Tiago Nassunculo were the lads on target for Star as they beat Powerleague 2-0 to leave boss Bennett on cloud nine.

He said: “I am so proud of all the lads, including my goalkeeper Trent Stanley who pulled off a real Gordon Banks-style save to keep us in it at one point.

“But everyone was superb, they went out there and did exactly as they were asked and Sunday has to go down as one of the best days of my life.”

Star will take on Hungate Yellow in the final after they beat Wasps 9-2.

Kieran Higgs led the way for the reigning Division One champions with six goals while Sam Bedwell-Byatt, Ryan Harnwell and Harry Baldry were the other lads on target. Josh Atkinson and James Theodoulou scored the Wasps goals.

n MALBORNE continued to close in on a successful defence of their League Cup crown after booking their place in the semi-finals.

Sam Shields and Jonny Crier were both on target in a 2-0 win against Bourne Red. In the other quarter-final played on Sunday Arthur Franklin and Darryl Edwards fired Stamford to a 2-1 win against Deeping.

n RYAN Buckley and Alfie Hayes both netted hat-tricks as Wisbech St Mary Yellow went third in Division Two with a 9-2 win at Crowland.

n GOALSCORING king Lui Tompsett smashed six goals as Thurlby hammered Woodston 12-0 to take a step closer to the Division Three crown.

Jordan Laud wasn’t far behind his team-mate with four while Jack Morgan and Noah Rodman also got their names on the scoresheet.

The village side are now a point clear at the top of the table with two games in hand over second-placed Glinton but manager Alex Watson isn’t getting carried away just yet.

He said: “Scoring 12 goals away from home was a great effort but I would like to add that Woodston never stopped trying so they deserve credit for that.

“We are in a good position but we will not be getting too excited as we still have to play Glinton and Paston before the end of the season so it will still go down to the wire.”
