Junior football: Kelly scores a cracker on his debut for red-hot Star
Under 13: BRANDON Kelly enjoyed a dream debut as Northern Star Red breathed new life into their Division One title hopes with a 4-2 win against Malborne.
After signing from Netherton, Kelly opened the scoring for his new club in spectacular style with a 25-yard free-kick.
Kelly’s goal was undoubtedly the pick of the bunch but Nassunculo Tiago added to the highlights reel with a couple of tasty goals and Billy Bennett was on target from the penalty spot against the reigning Northants Cup holders.
Manager Marvin Bennett said: “The boys were fantastic against Malborne and I thought our back three of Amir Ward, Kane Baker and skipper Kyle Wymer were superb and they dealt with everything that was thrown at them.
“It was a terrific performance and it really keeps us in the title race. We have started the second half of the season looking fit and strong and we now believe we can really mount a serious challenge.”
WITH Malborne beaten by Star, Hungate Yellow have opened a three-point lead after they crushed Stamford 10-1.
Kieran Higgs led the rout with four goals as the young Daniels were put to the sword by the defending champions.
HOLBEACH took another step towards promotion after they walloped Wisbech St Mary Purple.
Levi Butland scored twice while Jamie Balding, Luke Barnes, Michael Palmer, Freddie Pearson, Sam Ground, Jack Issett and Cameron Rickersby were all on target in a 9-1 win.
But despite his team sitting in pole position in the race for the Division Two title, manager Des Ford insists they can do without the favourites tag.
Ford said: “We are in a good position in the table but I wouldn’t way we are favourites to win the league.
“We have too many tough games coming up for me to say that.
“If we can get something from our games at Wisbech St Mary Purple and Netherton we will be in a good position as regards promotion.
“The title would be nice but promotion was always our number one target.”
Holbeach will get the chance to see how they fare against top-flight opposition next weekend when they take on Powerleague in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
Northern Star Black clung onto their lead at the top of the Division Two table after becoming the first team in almost two seasons to beat Wisbech St Mary Yellow.
Massimo Rocchio, Luke Stephenson, Zach Nunn and Scott Nottingham were the boys on target as Star shone against the Saintsto win 4-0.
JACK Morgan and Jordan Laud were both on target as Thurbly beat Northern Star Blue 2-1 in their Division Three top -of-the-table clash.
Despite falling a goal behind, Morgan had Thurlby level by half-time before Laud’s second-half penalty secured the points.
Thurlby are now four points clear but manager Alex Watson thinks the title fight will go right down to the wire.
He said: “Both teams played as well as the weather allowed us to and the most important thing was to get the win against one of our rivals.
“It leaves us well placed but there are still four other sides with a realistic chance of winning it and I expect we will all drop points between now and the end of the season.
“So it could easily go down to the last few games of the season.”
