Under 11 Division Two: Thorney Colts delvered a classy away display to ensure new manager Frank D’Agnano enjoyed his first game in charge.
First-half goals from Aiden Tipton, Josh Evans and Durrell Bate Mathurin delivered a dream debut for D’Agnano who has replaced Rick Lane in the Colts hotseat.
Jacob Hoffman hit back for the home side with 10 minutes to play although by then it was too little too late for Thorpe Wood to salvage anything from the game.
But it’s not too late for the Colts to mount a promotion challenge according to D’Agnano.
He said: “I have been involved with the team for three years but this was my first game in charge so obviously I am delighted we got the win. And the boys really deserved it as they were terrific in the first half when I thought our midfield pairing of Tyler Spridgeon and Josh Evans were outstanding.
“I think the result moves us up to fifth place which certainly gives us something to build on and we still have an outside shot of promotion too.
“We still have Corby and Deeping to play so we have a chance and we will be giving it our best efforts.”
It was Tipton who opened the scoring when his cross from the right wing was adjudged to have been handled by a Thorpe Wood defender.
And Tipton made it pay by burying his kick past Thorpe Wood goalkeeper Oscar Bradbury and into the bottom corner.
Minutes later Thorney were 2-0 up after a passing move that started with keeper Fabio D’Agnano and ended eight passes later when Evans buried the ball into the back of the Thorpe Wood net.
It was an intricate goal but there was nothing intricate about the Colts’ third which was pure route one.
Once again the move started with D’Agnano but this time it was a hefty punt that was latched onto by Bate Mathurin who took a touch before dispatching his shot for 3-0.
With the scoreline in their favour, Thorney took their foot off the pedal in the second half but they still managed to create a handful of chances to add to the scoreline.
Ben Denton twice forced Bradbury into making decent saves while Lee Corder also went close before Hoffmann snatched a late consolation for Thorpe Wood.
