Under 11, Division Four: IT WAS Pam the man for Star in this Division Four basement battle.
With both teams struggling to make headway James Pam broke the deadlock in spectacular style at the start of the second half with a blistering drive from outside the area.
And although it was far from the final act in what proved to be a thoroughly entertaining contest, it was decisive according to Star manager Glen Harper.
He said: “It has been a pretty tough season for the boys so we came into this game determined to get some points on the board. But it really wasn’t easy for us out there and for long spells we were under the cosh.
“After a bright start we were on the back foot before James scored with a great goal early in the second half and that really got us going.
“It was a big goal in every sense and thankfully we were able to add another as Parkside pulled one back which made for a nervy finale.”
Parkside have only picked up two points all season but they began the game looking the most likely of the two sides to score. In fact, the visitors did get the ball into the back of the Star net twice in the early stages through Dan Sturdy and Josh Howard but both efforts were ruled out for offside.
At the other end Parkside’s goalkeeper Elliott Tiffin-Gearing had saves to make from Jordan Stephenson, Adam Holland and Star skipper Callum Grist.
To that point Tiffin-Gearing had been comfortable dealing with what came his way, but there was no dealing with Pam’s effort 10 minutes into the second half.
After picking the ball up on the halfway line, Pam weaved his way past a couple of challenges before thundering his shot into the top corner. And minutes later Star doubled their lead when Ethan King hooked Grist’s well-placed corner into the back of the net.
But Parkside struck back with 10 minutes to go through Joshua Martyr and it was all hands to the pumps again for Star with Chadwick Hercock coming to his side’s rescue with a series of excellent challenges to deny Parkside an equaliser.
Parkside boss Daniel Gibbs said: “I was very proud of our team on Sunday. This was probably our best performance of the season so far and we were very unlucky to come away with nothing.
“We had a few big decisions go against us that were a bit harsh, two disallowed goals and two big penalty shouts not given, but that’s football.”
