Junior football: Yaxley looking good for another title win
Netherton U14's v Yaxley White match action at The Grange
UNDER 14: YAXLEY Whites look unstoppable in their pursuit of a third straight Division One title after they moved nine points clear with a 4-1 win against Voyager.
The champions took a 2-0 lead through Trey West and Jack Briggs inside 20 minutes before Voyager hit back through Gianni Forcellati. But a 25-yard piledriver from Liam Laughton just before the break put the mighty Whites back in the box seat.
In the second half Yaxley remained on top and they added to the scoreline when Toby Edwards’ excellent cross was diverted into his own net by a Voyager defender.
Gary Warman’s side have now won all eight league games this season and the boss is clearly delighted with the way his team have handled themselves so far.
He said: “Voyager were probably the better side for the first 20 minutes and yet we were 2-0 up so it certainly wasn’t easy but I thought we were a lot better in the second half.
“We got the ball out wide well and generally passed the ball much better against a very good Voyager side. It was always going to be a difficult game but we have come through it and it is definitely a case of so far so good.
“But there are some excellent teams in the league with Netherton still to play and Riverside who are on a bit of a run so we will not be taking anyone for granted.”
One team Yaxley certainly won’t be taking for granted are Godmanchester who they face in the semi-finals of the Hunts Cup on February 12. After losing two semi-finals and a final in the last three seasons, Warman and his players are determined to lift the one piece of silverware to have so far eluded them.
“It is the one gap on our CV and we would love to finally get our hands on that trophy,” he added.
NETHERTON moved into second place in Division One after beating Deeping 2-1. James Hill-Seekings scored for the home side but goals from Dylan Horn and Joe Kelly saw Netherton escape from Outgang Road with the points.
RIPPINGALE and Folkingham took full advantage of a rare slip from title rivals Wisbech St Mary to go top of Division Two.
With Saints held to a shock 1-1 draw at basement boys Werrington, Rippingale moved past them on goal difference thanks to goals from Zak Munton (2), George Hick and Jonjo Roberts in a 4-1 win against Powerleague.
Rippingale manager Andy O’Connell said: “It was a real shock when we saw the Werrington result. It has left the door open for us a bit but the ball is still in the Wisbech court as they have a game in hand.
“It gives us a chance but all we can worry about is our own games and our own performances. And we had a good one against Powerleague.
“They gave us a really good game but we took our chances really well and that proved to be the difference between the sides.”
Mitchell Johnson scored four times as Division Three leaders Glinton opened up a five-point gap on their nearest rivals with an 8-2 win at Parkside.
